editing software question...

Hey guys, quick question.

I've gone through some of the editing software links and I'm stuck with a decision. I've decided to edit a short on my own, in my spare time for fun. I want to get a cheap program that does the basics and doesn't take months to learn. I know I'll get what I pay for but I need the basics and still get some form of quality out of it. Does something like this exist? Obviously FCP and Avid are way out of my price range and ability, so what programs are user friendly for a beginner and affordable?

Suggestions appreciated.

I would suggest you start editing with iMovie,it comes free with every Mac (as does iDVD). If you want more power, you can then move to editing with Final Cut Express, it's easier to learn than you might think (get Michael Wohl's book, "Editing Technique with Final Cut Pro") and if your needs grow to professional-level demands, it's a natural transition to move up from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Color, DVD Studio Pro, Compressor) building on what you learn. Color alone is worth the cost of the entire Final Cut Studio suite. The elegance and simplicity of a Mac based solution for editing is worth the extra cost (coming from someone who's used both PCs and Macs).

Interesting. The guy who captured it all on my external hard drive said they are quicktime files. Can I still use Vegas with these or do I have to capture again somehow? if I need to recapture for Vegas, what will I need?

Thanks guys.

I'm working with vegas but if you want simple and still with many options try pinnacle studio. It is verry user friendly and easy to learn but it will crash on you so now and then..
Once you want more try sony vegas and architect (never crashes) or the cheaper version.
