Editing software for PC Laptop

Need tips on a good editing program that can handle the P2 media in an easy way. Work mostly with SD and HD (720pn)

Uses MediaComposer 5 today but it requires a lot of power of the laptop.
The laptop I have today can not handle HD.

Well, I think Sony Vegas can do the trick. When I start cutting I start with vegas 4 and then it was famous for run on not very powerfull hardware. I dont konw how is it right now, but I think it can work

Vegas fits the bill, but only 12 or later. They added full P2 support in 12 (over a series of updates). Prior to that, you needed DVFilm's Raylight in order to cut P2 with it.

I agree Vegas is the only editor that has a chance, but "The laptop I have today can not handle HD." is unlikely to be solvable with just software. Editing is mostly about file IO, software can't fix that.

I belive that MediaComposer requires more hardware power than other editing software.

Lightworks is not very processor intensive (likely less than Vegas) and can import and work with P2 files. Inexpensive too. Can't believe I'm recommending this software after literally throwing it out a few years back, but the work they've been doing on it is very impressive. I'm beta testing the Mac version now.

SD? What's that? Is that some sort of new 0.4k?

More seriously, Avid is now up to v8. Try the demo. They're now offering a subscription that's surprisingly like the Creative Cloud (minus all of the non video editing apps).

If you already use After Effects or Photoshop, consider Premiere. If you subscribe to Creative Cloud you already have it, so you might as well use it.

If you're using (or thinking of buying) a Macbook Pro, take a look at FCP-X. It may freak you out the first time you see it, but it's a very fast and flexible editor once you get to know it. And "professionals" are starting to cut reality TV shows on it. On deadline.

Regardless of the above, take a look at Lightworks. It's only $80/year subscription, and it's been used to cut Oscar winning films. And it runs on your choice of Window, Mac or Linux.
