Editing SD for HD

I was wondering if this is possible.... I was curious if there is a way to edit an SD version of your HD video, make all your changes, and then swap it with the HD source when you're done, and then render.... I'm editing in Premiere Pro cs3. If it doesn't work on this program do you know one that would work like that? Thanks!

It's called proxy editing and it's possible, but it's not the most efficent or simple way to do it. Basically you would render out an SD version of every single one of your clip, place them all in a separate folder, do your edit, then replace all the low res clip in that folder with the high resolution one. Premiere will continue to look for the files in that folder, and as long as they're named the same, it will link to the new HD file.

I am not sure about Premiere but both Avid and Final Cut have an option like this.

It's also referred to as offline editing. Usually the process of relinking the proxies to the HD masters is called conforming.
There's heaps of information about it online, here's a quick blog post I found about doing it in Premiere.

I would recommend just biting the bullet and upgrading your software to CS5 and your hardware to an i7 950 or i7 2500K at a minimum.
