Editing SD for HD later?

Hey, i'm looking to get one of the HDV cams probably the A1 pretty soon. I've been using FCP for years now and i have a pretty good handling on it. I'm assuming what i am wondering about is offline editing.

Is this how that workflow works?

Record in HDV
Mark ins and outs for batch capture
When capturing down convert to SD
Edit the project in SD
Remove the SD footage
Re- batch capture all the footage in HD
Sub it in for SD

In the effort of time and space and speed of editing is this a realistic method of working?

be careful with the timecode. i'm not sure how good of format HDV is to capture SD and then batch capture again to upres to HD.

in the past i have captured at full res HDV and then took the clips into quicktime pro converting them to something that is able to be edited in realtime and saved those files in another folder keeping the names the same. at the end of the edit, make all clips offline and reconnect them to the HDV folder. pretty easy and eliminated re-capturing.

To be totally honest, NO! That's not a good workflow at all! You're introducing headaches. Here's what I STRONGLY recommend you do:

1- Capture the tape using the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec.
2- After capture, use the DV Start/Stop detect to split your takes up.
3- Edit with AIC Sequence.

There is not one legitimate reason I've ever heard for using and SD version to edit and going back to HDV for final rendering. It's a waste of time, a royal PITA, and there's no reasone for it. With the AIC codec, you'll edit as fast and easy as SD, without the HDV "conforming" headaches.

Hey Ben thanks for that info,

Another small question, will i be able to work with the xh-a1 with 5.0.4 or will i need to upgrade to the 5.1?

FCP added 24F support with version 5.1.2, I believe.

So if you want to use the XHA1 in standard-def or 60i, 5.0.4 would be okay. But if you want to use 24F, I believe you'd need to upgrade to the latest version.
