Editing questions! Please help a newbie out

Hey guys, although I don't own a DVX100 yet, I do plan on buying a couple to make a mountain bike film next year. At the moment, I'm using Adobe Premiere 6.5 for Mac...can anyone tell me if I am able to capture/edit 24p video with this program?

I wont be straying from Mac, so if Premiere 6.5 doesn't work I guess I'll have to buy non Adobe software. I'm not a huge fan of Final Cut Pro, but does anyone have suggestions on what I should buy?

I'll also be shooting inerlaced with the DVX100 in order to slow the footage down....are there problems with mixing interlaced and 24p video? Thanks,

Tam

Will be interested in seeing your mtbike work. Shooting some footage over in B.C.?

I have only used PPro with my DVX and don't recall what the limitations of 6.5 are with 24p footage.

I do know that this question and your other about mixing footage have been answered on the forum. Use the search form and you should find the info. I know the mixing footage question was discussed recently.

Re: Editing questions! Please help a newbie out

I believe the only way to get 24p footage in Premiere 6.5 is to convert it using DV Filmmaker or AE.

Re: Editing questions! Please help a newbie out

ok, thanks guys. I'll search for some answers. I'd rather keep it in first generation for editing....

Hans K, I'm actually releasing my first full length mtb film in october.

Check out my trailer and film stills at http://www.cleancutfilms.ca/

Footage was shot with a GL1, JVC 820U, and Bauer S709 XL Super 8mm cam.

Re: Editing questions! Please help a newbie out

De-interlacing to get a 24P file from your computer is way too much hassle, much more of a hassle than is neccesary, anyways.

Unless you absolutely need a 24P native clip (ie, for a film print) you'll be fine shooting in 24P standard. This gives you 60i footage that you can edit in Premiere 6.5, and it'll look exactly the same as if you had shot it in 24P advance. If your intended output is NTSC, it's much more convenient to shoot in 24P standard, and edit in 60i in Premiere 6.5 - it just makes things simpler! :)

Hey, thanks Mike. I've been reading up on this now and it makes so much more sense for me to be editing in a 29.97 timeline.

Has anyone here shot 60i on the DVX100? How does it look compared to "in camera" slow motion from real film?

If I buy the DVX100a, I can still shoot in 24p standard right? Thanks!

Re: Editing questions! Please help a newbie out

Both 60i and 24p can work fine in the same timeline. What I do is turn off deck control for the 24p stuff and digitize it like a do everything else.
Obviously the 24p isn't as smooth as 60i stuff when slowed down. I've never had a problem with either one of em though.

Very nice trailer. There's some good looking footage in there. Nice quick editing that fits the music.

Damn, I am so jealous of the riding up there. Not that it's bad down here (SF bay area).

Did you create a helmet mount for the JVC? The helmet cam footage looks really clean and not from a lipstick cam.

Also, there's another member that's filming a mtb video using the DVX. He's posted a trailer. Shoot, I can't remember the name... I edit this post if I can come up with the info.

Re: Editing questions! Please help a newbie out

I did use the 820U for the helmetcam stuff. Worked great, only about 3 pounds on each side of the head. Those 16mm ones are just rediculous...I have to wonder how riders don't break their necks wearing them. It's almost worth it for the image though...

I'd love to check out the mtb trailer filmed with a DVX...I'll try searching. If you remember, please post it! :)
