editing question

I have two laptops (2ghz p4moble with 512mb of ram and an apple 867mhz g4 with 256mb ram)and two camcorders (dvx100a and sony hdfx1).
I was doin editing on my friends hot g5, but now i faced with the task of editing on my laptops. The question is: If i Upgrade the memory of these laptops, which laptop could I get decent performance out of when editng. Also, which editor should i use with the better laptop? What kind of performance would i expect out of editng, processing?

I think you might be more inclined to make this a software descision...

are you more comfortable editing with Final Cut? or something on Windows?

Your windows machine is definately faster than your mac.. but whos to say you'll get more done on the windows machine?

Personally I would let my NLE decide which machine I use...

You should post in the sony section to ask about other people editing HDV. From what I've heard the workflow for editing HDV is much faster and smoother on a pc. It might choke on your mac. I'm all for relying on a NLE, but for at least one of the tools in your box your hardware might not be able to cut it.

My friend did the editing on his g5. He moved on because of a job opportunity out of state. I am comfortable with both operating systems, but I am usually on my windows machine primarily when doing work. What editor on the windows side can handle both sd and hd video? What editor can handle the dvcpro hd compressor.
