editing on vegas

I have just started editing my feature on my laptop using vegas 4.0....

1 ) Should I save my vegas projects on my desktop or on an external hard drive?

I save all the capture footage on external drive but when I finish working on my rough cut I save the changes on my desktop. I heard it is ok cos there is not much data there. Is it true?

2) And, why when I preview my captured tape on external monitor the picture is not smooth? Is it because my laptop is not fast enough?

Thanks a lot,
Voytek

1) .veg files are relatively small (Vegas in non-destructive so the .veg points to your footage, rather than copying it). At this point, all of my projects have their own footage/directory so I save the .veg files in the corresponding project directory for my sanity.

2) Maybe. What quality are you viewing at? Try a lower preview quality.

You can run a project off an external drive. No sweat. In fact, it's ideal for being able to work on the project both on your desktop and your laptop without having to transfer anything.
