Editing On Laptop

First off I would just like to say thanks to all of you.

Im about to purchase a dvx100a and Im looking at editing on a 1.7 ghz HP laptop , using vegas. I beefed up memory by 512MB and now looking for a video card upgrade. It looks like Im going to have to go external or PCI , I was told that with a Laptop your choices for video cards are limited but It seems like my last ditch as far as making this a editing station.

Anyway Im trying to get some advice on how to buff up my setup from some people who use Laptop's for editing or have the know how to assist.

Thanks As Always You Guys rock

Vegas doesn't use the video card, so it doesn't matter.

But 1.7 Ghz -- unless it's dual-core? -- isn't a lot of processing power for video editing. Vegas will still work, but real-time playback will be tough, and rendering will take a long time.

The most important component in your system, for Vegas, is the processor. You want the fastest you can get.

What David said.

I use a laptop and a desktop.

The laptop is a 1.8 Ghz Duo Core w/ a gig of Ram.

It works better and smoother than my 3.2 Ghz P4 HT w'a gig of Ram.

I work off of an external drive (not SATE but 7200 rpm, 8mb, etc) connected by USB2.0.

No problems whatsoever for capturing, editing or rendering.

So pretty much Its looking like Im going to be buying a MAC or a decent PC , Any recomendations for good decently priced PC's for editing ?

Unless theres some type of external Processor that I can hook up to my Laptop.

I have a Pentium M 1.6 w/ a gig of RAM and I use AE7 and Vegas 6 no prob. Key is having a good amt of space on Hard drive and atleast 1gb of RAM. The more RAM teh merrier.

USB 2.0 Drives are your friends...

Well, if you're considering a Mac, be sure you're doing it for the right reasons -- do you want a Mac? Is there something for the Mac that you want to use which you can't get on Windows?

I ask because a lot of people have been saying they're buying Macs to run Windows on, not because they want Macs, but because they think Windows or Windows apps will run better on them. They won't. I'm not saying they run poorly, either, but if you're looking to run Windows, then there's no reason to spend the exta $$$$ on a Mac.

I haven't looked for a laptop for a while, but when I have, I've usually found that HP gives you the best bang for your buck.

Hey Guys

Wel the thing is , Is that Im going to be taking a FCP course at my community college and May want to buy a MAC to get that program and they just been rep'd to last and are known to be virus free.

Well I guess using my laptop is out the window

David,

I think you well know what I'm thinking about your wise and knowledgeable inputs. So, I quoted you here:

Where I opened a new thread -- RED editing related. Not being a techie, I would like to know if you can satisfy my curiosity and needs on the Mac capability in order to handle with Windows apps.

My major doubt: Do a 'MacBook Pro' run ALL of the apps for Windows? And for the future Vista will the Mac be prepared too?

:dankk2: in advance!

In theory, you should be able to run any program which runs on Windows. Maybe there would be hardware incompatibility issue somewhere with some program. Don't know. I haven't heard of any.

Don't know for sure about Vista, but I'd have to think it will run.

I went out on a limp and bought a mac, I used them in school but never thought of actually buying one. I randomly bought a 15inch macbook pro with 1gig of ram and I have been using FCP with it. It has been running great so far!

I always recommend the Dell outlet site(go to Dell.com to find it). I've stolen...er I mean purchased two refurb/reconditioned laptops from there....awesome deals, no visable or working difference between new, and hundreds below a comparable model on the market.

.

I've been shopping for laptops for a while now and it seems fancy video cards drives price up considerably. Since vegas doesn't depend on a vid card, what's the advantage of a laptop with a high end vid card, assuming the laptop is mainly for editing and monitoring shoots?

Guys

I found a 933mhz G4 mac for sale. The guy says it runs FCP fine and that he can install any other program from MAC that I want. It comes with a keyboard and mouse so I'll have to buy a monitor. He's asking about 600$

What do you think . Thank you , Thank you.

What do you mean by USB drives are your friends? Are you somehow adding virtual RAM or are you just talking about HDDs... I know this is a stupid question, but I still hope we'll see the da when we can use SD cards or other solid state/or not HDDs too as "RAM" slower, but with a program that understands the speed of this "RAM" and finds a use for it... lol

You should definitely try out your laptop for editing before you abandon the idea of using it. I can edit real-time HDV in preview quality with my 1.8ghz single-core processor.

Don't really know how it works, but I can. Rendering takes a really long time though.
