Editing: love it or hate it?

I love editing almost anything but a dramatic conversation.

But mostly I love editing sound (sound design/mixing) and color grading. For me, that's where the magic happens.

Dramatic conversation is the most fun for me to edit. I think sound is also really fun, as is color correcting/grading. After Effects is also a lot of fun to work with.

The thing about editing is that it's really fun until you run into a problem and nothing is working. Then I just get stressed out and irritable.

Of all the different aspects of editing, I like color grading the best. I can sit for hours just coming up with different looks and variations on a specific look.

This comes in handy because I save them as a preset for future projects.

How can you not like editing? When I shoot I have a mental idea that I'm constantly manipulating trying to decide how I want the scene to be cut together. Once I get to editing and I get to physically manipulate my vision, it's one of the most rewarding parts.

I edited a 77 minute comedy documentary from over 77 hours of raw footage over the course of two years.

77 hours of footage for a 77 minute comedy? what the hell. were they just saying anything in hopes of being funny accidently?

editing is definitely a chore. i like to edit the film in my head but generally hate going through the process of physically doing it

I just picked up a really good editing book "In the Blink of an Eye". I highly recommend it.

I also love editing. Avid's been my livelihood for the last... well - I won't age myself just yet. Suffice to say a long many years.

As for Walter Murch's writing ("In the Blink of an Eye", "Behind the Seen" - yes, 'Seen', etc), please tell me you are joking with the tongue firmly planted in the cheek. Don't get me wrong - the old man can cut some film but geezzz...... His style, his metaphysical hoo-ha, his pedantic blabbering on and on about the most inane garbage. Give me a break. He even goes on to discuss his upright 'kinetic energy' posture, padded shoes and cardboard cutouts of stick figures to tape next to his monitors.

A friend was at a Foto-Kem session where he made the limo driver go pick up his oh-so-precious padded shoes before he'd even talk about getting started. Counting eye blinks and breaths - I could go on and on (obviously) but, man, go rent one of his films before subjecting yourself to any of his drivel.

Any apologies to Alexa who's in San Fran. Walter's up in Marin County counting blinking eyes and avoiding Coppola in Napa traffic.

Anyway - I do love editing. '07 was a hat trick for Telly's - entertainment, documentary and commercial (Turner Latin America, Military Channel, The TUBE Music Network).

I love logging tapes, especially 40 hours / month. Usually that is party time for me where lots of beer is drank & music is blasted in my hazy editing bay while I go through my surf footage filtering out 90% of the crap.

Now, when you put it like THAT...editing sounds like a blast!

I actually don't mind it so much. Its the capturing and logging part I hate. Sure it saves your ass down the road but I get frustrated and usually capture on the fly and wind up searching for what I need when I think I need it. It's a pain but somebody here has to be disorganized!

As for Walter Murch's book...I give the man a lot of respect for what he's been able to accomplish. But, I can't help but agree with you, Ferercity, about his self-commentary...blathering on as if he is single-handedly curing cancer. A professor at NYU was personal friends with him (he was close friends with her dad) and she made "In The Blink Of An Eye" required reading...some of what he said clicked for me...number 1. you cut with Emotion. But a lot of it seemed too self-important. IMO.

yeah i love it!!! geting the perfect cut is like shooting a three pointer and as soon as the b-ball leave the finger tips you just know it's going in!!!!

After using my last summer editing a musical, I radically went from loving to hating. I still hate it, knowing I have to do the same this summer.

Hi Alexa. LTNC by the way. Im back to really enjoying it since I got this FCP2 upgrade installed. Seriously the the FCS2 upgrade has opened the options up so wide for me ....... I can go where my imagination takes me. I should be the ad guy for FCS2 after that line.

hiya- glad you like it. yes, it is pretty cool to be able to do execute what you imagine and what you have yet to imagine. i've been looking at power points these days and it is odd: "that is all you can do with that?" I ask..

Absolutely love the editing process.

It is when I realize if what I shot works or not. It is where I learn all of my mistakes and all of my executions

I love cutting and adding thr many layers that makes film come alive; color correction, sound design et al

I love editing. I can just sit at my computer with something to drink, putting it all together, finding a rhythm. That's what I love about writing too. Writing and Editing are my favorite parts of making films.

Editing a sequence, say for a short film = fun.

But editing a thirty minute wedding video sucks balls.

Well put.

I think sound design is really fun, too.

You keep adding tiny sounds and eventually it sounds awesome. I get really arrogant about my sound design sometimes. I'll show somebody a logo and they'll say, "It looks cool" and I say, "What about the sound?" "Well, it fit."

"I bet you didn't realize that wasn't 1 sound; it was 15 sounds. I bet you didn't realize that."
