I found a great deal on a dell portable desktop right around XMAS. A Inspiron 9200 3Mhz P4 chip, 1gig RAM, XP Pro, yada.... $1370.00 out the door. I'd never buy a new machine from Dell as I'm spoiled with this box for the price. It came with 1 year next day on location support, and a case.

I suggest that you start watching the inventory in the outlet store. The only thing is you'll have to be patient in order to get the machine you want. The stock is up around the holidays and it's wise to wait for incentives like free shipping or additional discounts.

I think new the box I got was around $3K, so at half the price it pays to wait (if you can).

PS - I also run DV Rack on this machine and I love it! The laptop had USB 2, so I take the video into the firewire port and capture to a fast external USB drive. Between DV Rack, and the Firestore FS4....I don't expect to buy tape anythime soon.

I recently purchased a Alienware Area 51m 7700 the new 3.06Ghz model. It took them about 3 months to build it, but I ordered it when it wasn't even out yet so.... that's not too bad. Unfortunatly it got bounced in shipping so I had to ship it back to get the hard drives replaced. They got it back to me in another month and I am happy now. Damn fast, laptop. DVRack runs great. But I find I don't use the laptop as much as my older one due to its enormous size. The laptop wieghs about 17 pounds, it's friggin huge. But then again it is not technically a laptop it is a desktop replacement. I have had no problems since. Would I buy another one...... Well the verdict is still out. I will make that decision in another year or so. I bought a 3 year warranty so we will see what happens in 2.5 years.

I am currently happy with it though!

I know someone who bought a similar alienware to the one that no ca$h spec'd. It's a very robust laptop and runs Premiere pro with no problems. Be warned though, this isn't some small sony vaio laptop that you can fit in a shirt pocket, it's big. Still portable, but heavier and bigger than your average laptop. Its a sweet machine though and I would love to have one.
