Editing HDV in Premiere

Hello All,

Up until now I have been using Premiere Pro 1.5 with an off the shelf firewire on a P4 3.4ghz pc. with 1.5gig ram. If I want to purchase Premiere Pro 2.0 and get into editing HDV footage, Premiere tells me I must go with a DUAL Xeon Processor system and that the Dual Core Pentium D's and AMD opteron dual cores won't work. Is this true? That video will be too sluggish and u can't edit smoothly UNLESS you have a dual processor (not dual core) system?

What are you guys usuing?

Thanks for any input.

I'm not sure about other people, but i've done most of my work on a dual Xeon 2.8ghz w/ 2 Gigs of Ram; 1 Terabyte RAID 5 Storage; OS drive is 7200rpm SATA 250g.

Can't comment on HD editing since I have yet to do any, but you will need plug-in (AspectHD from Cineform) or a capture card AJA Xena (I think) to do HD within PP2.0.

My system is ok, but I'm always looking for more power which equals more $$$.

Hope this helps

Hope this helps

I have an AMD 4000, 2gb ram, 36gb raptor and a 250 SATA2 hard drive. A friend of mine bought the Sony HC1 HD camera.
I think for the most part my system can handle it. I would recommend that you get a RAID 0 setup up for the hard drives and at least 2 if not 3 gb of RAM. I'm not to sure about the render times. I haven't done a lot of rendering with HD. But as far as editing the timeline in HD, I this configuration works well.
The Xeon and the duals might give you faster render thimes.

:)Hope this helps:)

I can possibly see adobe recommending a daul xeon (I would recommend it if there was no such thing as budget issues) but cant see not being abel to edit hdv on a pentium d 900 series or even the 800 series especially if your graphics card is being taken advantaged of <- that came out wrong but you get it. the compression on hdv is so much tighter than regular codecs that its important to have a lot of power but i think its overkill. I cant see adobe expecting people to be able to find daul xeon systems without building it yourslef, let alone being able to afford one. another option is to convert it to a diffrent hd codec (more space required but might be less power hungry on your cpu)

ok so these are the system requirments str8 off the adobe website:
Intel® Pentium® 4 1.4GHz processor for DV (Pentium 4 3.4GHz processor for HDV; dual Intel Xeon™ 2.8GHz processors for HD; SSE2-enabled processor required for AMD systems)

I dont know how accurate this is because even with a 2ghz pentium 4 i cant seem to print a video to tape without there being audio pops.

My main concern is being able to play HDV from the timeline in REALTIME after capturing a clip. And then after editing a project (with transitions, DVE's cg/graphics, etc) render it and be able to play it (again) from the timelight and output to tape without hiccups. I can't understand why a Dual Core processor wouldn't do this, but I want to make sure before I blow money on building a new computer.

The one thing I think you will NEED TO HAVE 2 Hard drives with RAID0. My SATA2 hard drive has a hard time keeping up with HD. That's why I'm going to 2 new SATA2 hard drives and RAID them together. If you can wait about 10 days I'll post the results...

cool. thanks. I am capturing to one Seagate SATA drive now (250gig, 72,000 rpm) so I just need a second one and raid them together??

You need to make sure that you board supports RAID. Then yes buy another one and format it and configure it for RAID0
