Editing HD in Vegas

Hey guys. I'm new to editing and working in HD and thought maybe you guys would have some advice and info on it.

What is the best way to ONLINE edit HD or HDV video in Sony Vegas?
The files are huge and won't preview realtime very well.

I'm using a really fast system but none-the-less as you know it's slow.

What needs to be done or not done and what is the most efficient way to start editing in HD?

Thanks so much!

I am on a 4 year old p4. I use Raylight on the green or yellow setting to do my cuts, because at those settings, it will play real-time for me. Then I plug in an external monitor and use the higher settings for CC, where the real time is less important to me.

I do this with HVX MXF files on a USB2 ext drive case.

It ain't perfect, but it works pretty well. And I recently put a moratorium on any new purchases until I absolutely exhaust the hardware and software I have, so...

On Vegas you should make sure that your project settings match your source material's properties. Also, 3 Ghz P4 and 2 GB of RAM is a must.

I have a AMD64X2 6000+ 3.1GHZ Dual Core CPU
3GB RAM
NVidia 8800GTS
850 Watt Power Supply
1TB of HD space
Sony Vegas 6.0 upgrading to 8.0

I have just been editing SD and I'm new to this HD.
I'm probably going to the HVX200, and avoid HDV.
Just wasn't sure how the whole P2 card thing worked or interfaced with Vegas NLE.

I don't know what to say about working with P2, but if you end up going HDV, CineForm intermediates are the way to go.
