editing footage with no timecode?

Can you edit footage with no timecode in FCP. Can you take single track audio and split the dialogue tracks for mixing later?

R.N,

1. You can't log footage without timecode. Therefore, you can't really edit without it.
2. If the audio was recorded on one track, it can't be split by person, only by time. But I really didn't quite understand this question.

Thanks. So editing footage without timecode would be like hard cutting from vhs to vhs then? The sound question I think you answered. Sound and Pic are carried on the same track sort of so unlike film where you split the different characters dialogue to different to smooth them all out and eq them in the mix. My background is film so i don't know if video is different that way.

Bull-poo poo! You can edit without timecode, and you can handle audio separately from video, and you can split the audio to different tracks and do whatever you want to it.

You just have to do it by hand.

The only things you can't do without timecode are:
1) automatically sync things together
2) automatically re-construct a project from a project file or EDL (for recreating after de-archiving or, e.g., recreating with higher-res footage)
3) probably other things...

But, suffice it to say, you can do almost anything as long as you do it yourself rather than have it done for you automatically.

As an example, as technology changes, I'm constantly asked by musicians to take a VHS tape and a CD of the same performance, and make 'em into a nice DVD. Very doable, just requires hand-syncing.

Like ullanta said, you CAN capture and edit your footage without timecode in FCP. You just need to capture on fly instead of setting in/out points while capturing. You can do that by hitting *capture* button on log and capture window. Also, it is a good way to capture your footage where FCP can't locate the timecode.
