Editing Firmware?

Anybody know how one would edit firmware on a camera to manipulate its feature set? Talking about consumer grade video cameras. Looking into altering the Sony CX550V to shoot 24p.

Depends on the camera, and depends on the community around it. I suggest looking in the respective forums to whatever camera you're using. I'd like to say that with the exception of some consumer point and shoot canons, the consumer video camera range is absent in terms of firmware hacks. Someone else (or google) may be of better assistance.

If 24p is all you're after, you're probably better off just selling the camera and buying something that shoots 24p already. Canon HV's would be in the same price range. If you don't want to use tape then the HF series from Canon would work as well.

Do you have any programing skills? Hacking a camera like that takes a lot of knowing, skill, and time and even then there is no guarantee that you'd be successful. Look at the hacks for the canon DSLRs. Hudson had luck with the 5D and T2i, but as of last time I checked, he wasn't able to getting anything going with the 7D.

Hacking firmware is not a trivial task. I would think you'd be better off just shooting 60i and converting it to 24p in post; that technology has been around for a while and it works reasonably well, Nattress and DVFilm Maker are two examples of solid good-performing programs for that purpose.

I need IR, Sony cameras are the only ones that have IR, but of course they don't do 24p.
