Editing DVD's

I have been asked to do an actor's showreel and he's going to be giving me loads of dvd's from which I need to pull out footage in FCP. What's the best way of doing this?

Either rip the DVD and convert MPEG-2 to QuickTime or play the DVD into a DV tape deck or camera. Essentially either way kinda sucks- I wish folks would get that DVDs are not good editing sources.
