Editing DVC Pro 50 Footage

Matt Grunau

Adobe Demigod
I have been approached to edit some footage a local TV station will be shooting (6+ hours, YOUCH!) and they will be shooting with DVC Pro 50. I know there isn't a way to capture with vegas.

If I had the TV station save their footage as something like Quicktime files with Sorenson 3 (just an example), would that still retain the 4.2.2. sampling, or would that be lost?

I am curious as to how I could have them backup their footage and put the files on multiple DVD's and work on it, and am assuming if they convert if to DV it will put it down to 4.1.1.

Also, when I export something from After Effects and it is Uncompressed or has something like the Animation Quicktime Codec, is that 4.4.4? Would a .tga file saved in Photoshop be 4.4.4.?

Lastly, it is going to be standard definition footage, but IF I can edit it in 4.2.2., will there be a marked increase in file size?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Yes, probably, depending on the codec used. But if they saved them as uncompressed quicktimes then the color info will be retained.

Correct.

Could be, if the original file was 4:4:4. If the original file was 4:1:1, saving it as an uncompressed QT won't automatically up the color resolution, it'll still be 4:1:1 carried within a 4:4:4 wrapper.

Yes, RGB files are inherently 4:4:4. If you create a file in photoshop and save it as RGB, it'll be 4:4:4.

DVCPRO50 takes up twice as much space as DV.

Thanks Barry. I think I will opt to NOT do this project. Much as I would like to play with the footage, 6+ hours of footage complete with Motion graphics, audio enhancements and all the bells and whistles for $1,500.00 (the projected amount I would make in DVD sales) seems a little slim pickens.

Shame though, the TV stations are so lousy around here, even with their fancy cameras and 100k editing suites, my 100A, Vegas, and my crew stomp the hell out of them. WOulda been neat.

I appreciate the info.
