Editing Checklist

What I need is a check list to remind me of the steps I need to go through to edit a video.

I looked around on Google but only found stuff about how to plan a video in the broadest sense. I am 73 and my memory is not so good, and I do not do video all that often. What I need is a reminder list of the things I have to remember to actually edit my clips. Something like this:

Editing Video

1. Capture clips
2. move clips to storyboard
3. Set start and end points in source window
4. Drag to timeline
5. Drag music to timeline
6. Fade music in and out
7. Fade dialog in and out
8. Do transitions
9. Do titles
10. Set levels
11. Export video

In a recent video, I could not for the life of me remember how to do the preliminary edit in the clips and was trying to do everything from the timeline. That meant I wasted hours of my time.

So, if someone could point me to a more comprehensive checklist like my sample above, I would appreciate it.

Hi graywolf,

Cool to see you are staying creative!

While I have not checked for such a checklist online, one of the reasons why you might be having a hard time finding one is because the order of operations while vary, either slightly or greatly, depending on the project. Plus, the details and language will also vary depending on your software.

But I think you have the right idea, for the most part.

-Capture / Import
-Organize (these steps may also be reversed depending on your workflow)
-Setting start and end points before dropping into timeline is a good habit, depending on how you like to work
-Drop into timeline
-Music, fades, cuts, transitions, superimpositions, titles, color/exposure adjustments are all ways of creating the look and feel of your project
-Definitely check levels to make sure nothing is clipping, but also to make sure you keep normal speech consistent, loud sounds consistent, etc..
-Export

Sounds like you already knew all of this and your list will work just fine...as long as it is giving you the results you want.
