Editing Canon 30F Footage in Final Cut 5.1.2

I have been looking everywhere for advice on editing 30F footage in Final Cut 5.1.2 and have had almost no luck. The two post I have found offered to different approaches. Please help.

The first was posted by Elton and explained that one can edit 30F in Final Cut by creating a Custom Preset using the HDV - 1080p24 Easy Setup and simply changing the 1080p24 sequence frame rate to 29.97. The problem I have encountered is that when the 30F clip is placed in the 1080p24 sequence (having changed the frame rate to 29.97) the entire clip immediately requires rendering.

Another post I found suggests simply using the 1080i60 Easy Setup to both capture and edit 30F. Although the person has no idea why it works, it does. I have tried this method and have had great results. the footage does not require any rendering and is exported in full frame out of Final Cut and into compressor as far as I can tell. The only modification I have made is to change the 1080i60 sequence field dominance to "None", so that when exported to Compressor the sequence is recognized as progressive. I then saved the configuration as a custom Easy Setup (HDV - 1080p30).

Does anyone else have any tips for editing 30F in Final Cut 5.1.2? Or can anyone tell me if what I am doing is legit?

Thanks, Hugh

I'm sorry -- which camera? Canon?

I'll send Shane Ross in here... he's been shooting HDV recently and might have insight...

Sorry, I shot both 60i and 24F and I couldn't get the camera to be recognized by FCP at all. The computer saw it, but FCP didn't. I resorted to capturing the footage as 1080i 29.97 via my Kona LH card. Without that I have no doubts that I would have been stuck.

Sorry.

Thanks for the response. I am shooting with the Canon XH-A1 in 30F and editing in Final Cut 5.1.2. Perhaps the problem is that no one shoots in 30F?

Thanks, Hugh
