Editing basics: regarding frame rates and unknown source footage

I have a 10 minute short I volunteered to edit, however, I have no idea what camera (or frame rate) it was shot on as the Director doesn't know what cameras were used (odd I know, but true), and I can't get in touch with the camera operators (yet). Apparently there were two cameras (different, same, I don't know). All I do know is I that have five tapes, and I captured them all in Vegas using the default (29.970 NTSC) capture settings.

QUESTION(S):

Assuming the cameras were NOT HD, PAL, or 24P, what do I need to concern myself with when editing, and when rendering out from an unknown source/frame rate?

Is there a way to discern the frame rate from the raw footage (counting frames per second or something?)

Any other questions, concerns, or tips I regarding editing unknown source material?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and hopefully this is much easier than I think! ;-)

When the footage is in your media pool, right-click on it and check the properties. You'll see its dimensions, frame rate, etc..

If it's 24p, Vegas will remove the pulldown.

(I do this in my tutorial -- check the sticky at the top of the forum.)

You don't really have to worry about much.

Question: When footage is captured 60i (or more specifically for what I'm editing, the Canon XL1 "frame mode"), I presume I should stay in NTSC standard 29.97 project mode?

Footage is always captured as 60i. If there are 24p pulldown flags, Vegas will remove them, not the capture program.

If you're using the Frame mode, then editing in 60i is fine. You can go into the Project properties and make it a progressive project, so it will be 30p, but I doubt you'll see a difference.
