Editing AVCHD files with Adobe Premiere Elements 9

I currently use Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 but it has been a royal pain converting mts. files from my camcorder to MPEG before editing because 4.0 does not support AVCHD/mts. The process just takes way too long -- sometimes as much time as I take to edit a video.

I know 7.0 onward accepts mts. files. I am thinking of upgrading to the latest 9.0, but can anyone tell me from their own experience how smooth the program handles mts. files? I've read that even though 7.0 and up accept these files, Premiere Elements lags when handling mts.

I just need to know if it is worth upgrading to 9.0 or if I should just stick with 4.0 and convert files as usual. Thanks!

I have the answer for you, because I tried Elements 9 myself. So, yup! h.264 playback performance is *immensely* better than on previous versions. Optimized, and without the need for special graphics cards. Also, version 9 is the first Elements version that supports 24p timelines too! My review of the app is here, for more info: http://goo.gl/Vj1H
I'd suggest you download the trial version of PE9 to test it yourself too.

Your review says that that AVCHD 1080 24p is not supported by Elements 9. So if you're trying to edit that are you stuck with transcoding to Cineform AVI or something similar?

No, you just use the dSLR 1080/24p template, which should have the same properties/attributes. But the fact you had to ask, shows that this can confuse people.

Please note that this is for REAL 24p streams. If your camera is recording in PF24 instead of real 24p (most consumer "24p" cameras record in PF24 for example), then you must use Cineform to remove pulldown, and then edit that in a dSLR 24p template.
