Editing a New Film Trailer

Hey guys,

I am about to cut a new trailer for my documentary, and was wondering if any experienced trailer editors could share some insight -- do you pick your music first?

Generally I like to pace trailers to some track, so I was curious if this was a common way to do it...

Thanks!
Steve

There is no right or wrong way to cut a trailer (or any material for that matter). When I cut a visually driven piece, I like to cut to music, especially if its up beat.

I tend to make a selects bin and figure out what would be place where given the arc of the song and content.

I dont know that such a method is good for documentary. When its content driven, I like to see what story I am trying to tell, and which bits from my overall piece tell that story.

Great article Zak and dead on...Definitely pick your music tracks first. I've often just structured the music out first and made the trailer fit those beats. Pay a lot of attention to sound design, too. This website has good, royalty free music I've used that is very cheap, if you don't mind digging through the selections. Check out the film soundtrack section--
