Editing 720 & 1080 footage in Premiere

We need to edit a charity video, and we have 2 sets of footage shot.

Batch 1 footage is shot at 24p 1080 at 1/50
Batch 2 footage is shot at 720, 60fps at 1/125

The footage was shot on the same Nikon DSLR and the idea is to have real time footage ( the clips shot at 24p) and to have slow motion footage - which was shot at 720 and 60fps.

My question is - how should i set up the editing software?

Should it be at 1080 24P and upscale the slo motion footage and change its speed to 40%

Then would you export the final render at 1080 ( which would then stretch the 720 slo motion clips?)

or just export to 720 - so its the size of the smallest footage ( which was my original plan).

thanks folks!

It all depends on the quality of the 720 footage.
Is it enough to scale up to 1080 without noticable loss.
If not 720p24 is the way to go.

For Jim: get a calibrated monitor

Edit everything at 1080 24P full HD. WHY? Because full HD is the norm. As for the slow motion footage, just place it on your timeline, and use the transform effect to scale it up to where you want it. If it is not already in 16/9, you may have to loose the top and the bottom. That is the only way to proceed. If the 720 footage is still not good enough, use the RED GIANT software to upgrade the 720 footage to 1920.

Thanks for feedback folks. We ended up with 3 sources of footage to edit in the same short.

720 50P,720 60P and 1080 24P

I am assuming its wise to export the final render to 720 so we're not stretching footage?

Thanks again!

I'd go with a 720p/24 sequence. Downscaling is a better idea than upscaling. And you certainly don't want to upscale the 720 to 1080, then downscale it back to 720 on export. Just stay 720 all the way.

I would upscale everything and then render the final version in any format from the HD version.

I don't claim to know as much as the other guys, but what I usually do in that case is edit it all on a 720 timeline, downsvalijg the 1080 and export the final project in 720.
It also gives you some reframing room with your 1080 material if needed/wanted.

Thats what id do, Unless it NEEDS to be 1080.
In which case then I'd use red giant "instant HD" plugin to upscale the 720 to 1080.
