editing 3d stereoscopic - Vegas vs. stereo toolbox on FCP

hello everybody,

After struggling for years editing 3d stereoscopic footage with 'homemade' methods, I just started using dashwood's stereo toolbox plugin on FCP, and a blackmagic 3d card.
Well, I am disappointed to say the least. even though I am using a state-of-the-art machine, it is superslow (in preview and rendering), it is full of bugs, it throws 'out of memory' and 'general error' like a mortar gone crazy, and, in order to process independent full res left-right streams, you have to manually switch things and export them one-by-one (after the biblical rendering+exporting times).
It looks like a nice tool if you stick to side-by-side format, but that is not a professional format to me.

- so, in brief, how is it with Vegas?

our stuff is mostly shot on the Panasonic 3d-a1, but we do have video streams in different formats and codecs to utilize as well (mov, avi, wmv).
we need our outputs to be mac-compliant: proresHQ, mov h264, as well as wmv.

A 48" (or 46?) JVC (passive, interlaced) is currently used to preview the output (either via blackmagic-hdmi and DVI as a third screen).

Anyone able to share his/her experience with me?
thanks!
Andrea

I haven't tried it myself, Vegas Pro natively supports MVC and everything is stereoscopic enabled. With NVIDIA 3D Vision support you can get proper 3D monitoring very affordably. The kit costs less than $100 and comes with glasses. All you need is a 120 Hz monitor, preferably 3D Vision certified. In short, Vegas has made 3D as simple as 2D. The only difference is you need to wear glasses!

The only issue is you can't render ProRes out of Vegas. What you can do is render other formats and get your ProRes off FFmpeg, or off a Mac/FCP.

I tried stereoscopic in different versions of Vegas 10. Very promising, with decent toolset, but buggy.
Bugs where I'd have to reboot , was getting weird color shifts in Anaglyph, and the reboots wouldn't necessarily
fix things..

Not sure how 11 is doing. Ive never really trusted Vegas since Sony took it over. It always seems about 80 percent
there, but like they wont spend serious money to make it great.

Vegas has a great GUI though, and I keep gravitating back to it for ease of use. If you buy it you can join the official sony Sony forum and then report the hell out of any bugs.

Sounds like its better than the FCP setup your struggling with though.

thank you all guys!
Wanting to remain in mac world, I am evaluating at the moment Avid MC6.
For what I have seen so far, this is exactly what I need. And it works amazing! There are still a couple of thing I am trying to figure out about it (already posted in the Avid forum), but I feel like I am going for that now.

Thanks again!
Andrea
