1. i shot using 24p advanced
2. i captured using the pulldown removal
3. i edited in a 23.98 timeline

BUT....

while editing i could see everything in my output to ntsc monitor

AND

i tried outputting to ntsc dv tape and it worked fine without having to reinsert the pulldown

???

*i made sure to check clip properties and timeline properties and all said 23.98

**in the RT dropdown menu on the timeline sometimes it would say 2:2:2:4 and sometime 2:3:3:2
?

please help me understand all this.

Re: editing 2:3:3:2

That sounds right to me, if you're in FCP 4. If you take 24pA, remove the pulldown & playback from a 23.98, Final Cut should automatically add pulldown from the timeline, and if your system is fast enough, play realtime straight to your monitor and deck at 30fps.

Unless I don't understand what you mean...this sounds like a Noah Kadner kind of thing.

Re: editing 2:3:3:2

ok, i like that explanation. final 4 can convert 23.98 to 29.97 in realtime.

BUT!

what about my output to ntsc dv tape which also worked out fine?

wait!

i just rendered and played it to tape so i guess it played it with pulldown re-inserted.

can it all be that simple and perfect?

Re: editing 2:3:3:2

can someone verify that jay and i are correct in our thinking here?

do you only need to convert the pulldown upon capture and then once edited in the timeline you can safely output to ntsc video or transfer to film?

Re: editing 2:3:3:2

this is the way everyone I know does it, and it's the whole reason why FCP 4 is so popular for DVX users.

if you need verification, go on the creative cow forum and talk to noah kadner. or just look at your footage. does it look good? then you're all set.

Re: editing 2:3:3:2

ok, so it will transfer to film just fine too?

Re: editing 2:3:3:2

FCP 4 inserts the pulldown when exporting to tape, from a 23.98 timeline. It's a great workflow courtesy of Apple and Panasonic.
I'm not so sure about going to film, you might want to call some DV to FILM houses.
