Editing 1080p .MOV files. Timeline stutters. How to use Intermediate ?

Im working on Vegas 8 Pro. Im trying to work on a project where the footage is 1080p .mov files @ 50mbps (avc codec). The files play back smooth in media player on my video workstation.

But on the vegas timeline they stutter so i have to work in draft lowest mode for preview. Even then its 8 fps playback. Its very difficult to work creatively with such a horrible playback rate. How do i work with an intermediate or proxy editing please ?

Thanks

You mean purchase neoscene just for this ? or your meaning to convert the files into cineform 720p proxies. If the latter. Then how do you do it ? Whats the workflow ?. I have o load all my 50 clips onto the time line and render them one by one ?

Hi,

Just got it done using a video convertor i had already installed. Everything runs fine on the timeline now. Its my first time working with proxies. :)

Thanks anyway.

Hi Plainman007,

So you just convert your 1080P mov file to AVi file then import back to vegas time line.

What converter are you using ? or you use the streamclip recommended by El Director ?

THanks

Hi Bluong > You can use any converter. Just make sure your not converting to a different wrapper type. So if your original source files are avi then convert them to small sized avi's with the same AR and PAR. and file names Then work with those files. When your done with your project and want to render the final. Just close yoru project temporairily. Then rename the folder having your smaller proxies, even adding a few alphabets at the end of the file name is enough. So when you reopen your project afresh vegas will say it cant find your footage files. Ofcourse it will, because you renamed it.

Then click SEARCH FOR THE FILES option in that dialog. It will locate the first clip for the project and show 2 versions in the results. One will be the proxy version the other will be the original large file. Select the original large version, and hit ok. It will now say it found all the other files too in the same folder. Click yes to all. Thats it. Now your project will open as before, but with all the original large files on the timeline. Then just render for your final product.

Remember, for this to work, your proxies should all have the same name as the originals and same extension too.

Hi all,

Everything went smooth with the editing of the proxies etc. The real problem starts when i switch out for the original .MOV files. The render gets dropped. Vegas just disappears from the monitor (self shutdown), Renders that freeze and stop half way through, and i even tried rendering different regions. All lock up after 3% or so of rendering. The files are all from a canon HDSLR. The funny thing is most programs report the original file as having 1088p instead of 1080p. Is it maybe because of this odd resolution that the problem is cropping up ? So i have to resize them to 1080p maybe ? Any ideas would be helpful.

El Director > I just downloaded Streamclip. Now what i want to know is,,, do i convert the original files into proxies using stream clip and then do proxy editing and then during final render swap them for the main files (which is basically what ive been doing excpet that the proxies were made with another transcoder) OR do you suggest just transcoding the main files into full hd counterparts that are used in the timeline as the main files and we render straight out of those files ?

If its the latter then what format offered in streamclip do we transcode to which will run smoothly in vegas yet maintain the high quality of the original .MOV file.

Thanks

Hi,

My small question is. When you do the final render. Is it being rendered from the DNxHD or similar high quality proxy. Or is it being rendered from the Original files that came from the camera ? I know how to do proxy editing. My problem comes when i swap for the original cam files. Vegas is unable to handle the original canon .MOV (with the effects and edits applied from the proxy edit) even in just the final render stage.

Thanks

The render comes from the DNxHD files. Vegas doesn't like the camera files at all. If you use my settings, the DNxHD files that I create become your new onlines instead of the cam stuff.

OK so the DNxHD files become permanant replacements to the cam files.

Is the quality exactly the same as you would get from rendering out of the cam files ?

Thanks

I think so. One thing to keep in mind though-the new onlines are going to be quite a bit larger than the cam files so make sure you've got space for them.

This is the best explanation I've ever seen for this and the whole thing finally makes sense.

Thanks!
