Edit .mov files on disk

hey all-
How do I edit the captured .mov file?
I recieved large .mov files on a dvd of footage from a live event. Is it possible to edit the original .mov files, or do I have to import the .mov file into FCP, export quicktime movies of the stuff I want, and erase the original?

Set your Sequence to match the footage on disk. Copy files off disk. Import into FCP and edit.
 
Right.
I am trying to free up hard drive space by removing unnecessary footage. Normally I only capture the footage I think I might need, in this case I was given huge .mov files on DVD.

you can select part of your footage in quicktime and save them before you go to final cut if you'd rather.
