Edit in SD with an HD product

Could someone tell me if this would be possible?

This is an idea to overcome how intensive high def editing is. Capture all your footage in one go, once in HD and the second time downconverted to SD. Make sure both versions are identical, down to the frame. Edit using the SD one, then once you're finished, change the footage source to the HD one, effectively making your entire project HD.

Thoughts?
 
This is called "Offline editing", and different NLEs ahave different ways of supporting it. I can't address PP... but search for offline editing in Premiere Pro?
