Edit a DVD...

I have a home movie burnt to DVD. This is not a data DVD but one that plays in a stand alone DVD player. Is there any way to get the audio off of the disc to edit on a timeline? I can get the video to the timeline but no audio. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

I know this sounds strange, but install the demo of the new Vegas Movie Studio+DVD Platinum, and it will update your AC3 dlls so that Vegas 6 can read AC3 files. (I don’t know if it will work with earlier versions of Vegas) Otherwise you will have to get a tool like AC3Decode or BeSweet and convert the AC3 stream in the VOB file to a WAV file that can be dropped on the Vegas timeline.

Here is what I do to get DVD's onto my computer. A while back I bought Pinnacle Studio 8 av/dv deluxe. It has a box that comes with that hooks up to a special card in the back of my computer. The box has AV hookups as well as S video. I than run my PS2 to this box and play the DVD in the PS2 and Capture through Pinnacle. Works great, gets audio and video. So I can capture anything with AV cables with this little device. I think other computers come with that option on the front of the PC though.

Are there any issues that surface once that demo expires?
No. The demo updates the AC3 component that you have already license to in Vegas 6+DVD. (gosh I love shared components)

With Vegas you can just put the DVD in the drive and drag & drop the .VOB files right onto the timeline.

If the DVD was encoded with PCM audio, I believe you can extract that too. If it was made with AC-3 audio, then you're out of luck. You'd have to re-record the audio, because Vegas can't use AC-3 as an importable source format.
