Edirol R-4 vs. SD MixPre/FP33/SD302

I have been turned on to the Edirol R-4 as a combo mixer/recorder running RCAs to the DVX100b vs a dedicated SD MixPre/Shure fp33/SD302 via XLR to DVX100B...

It seems like a great idea to have both the dual recording capability and a robust mixer in the R-4. Does anyone have any thoughts on pitfalls to this idea? Why don't others do it more?

Can you describe the hook up again?

People want to have a balanced xlr connection from beginning to end of the signal chain to reject noise. The SD302 has limiters that can be set up to preven the signal from overdriving into distortion. There are many reasons to have a mixer, but I won't list them here.

Mike,
I guess I was thinking of using the Edirol recording as the primary audio and the audio recorded to the DVX as a back up. The question is, why don't other use this set up.

From what I've been told the limiter on the Edirol is robust and overall recording is excellent.

maybe usially it is not nessery , till now edirol didnt have tc capability at all so wasnt much popular
if you like run it normaly for long distance , you will njeed transformers on edirol outs to run balance signal and some sort of passive swithch go from camera headphones to edirol .

if it works for you , why not
the new version does have tc , it doesnt support 23.98
what is not abig problem .

by the way - good mix on the fly is what usialy goes in , the iso tracks , cost money ( aditional time ) and since the camera doesnt have tc in/out , you will have to deal with free run + pull down ofset if you run 24 (23.98 )
quit mess .

your camera is not 24
there would be a drift as they would not be syncromize ( if you work with pro version , the simple one doesnt have tc at all)
so clap every xxxx minutes9 hours0 will be nessery in free run mod ( of course after casset /battery camera /recorder change)
the 23.98 and 29.97 are rellevant so there is no tc problem , you can easyly convert the 29.97 to 23.98 on nle .

Does the new Pro version have balanced outs? I know the original didn't. It's been awhile since I played with the original but I was severely unimpressed with it's build, features, and quality.

But like Oleg said, if it works for you, go for it.

Let us know how it goes.

i dont think they changed the hardwer to much
so i suspect it still unbalance .
if you really going to use r-4 as the main sound i was not warry about sending unbalance level . but if you are going to use the dvx , better convert .

by thre way check the oade site , they make modifications to edirol preamps
maybe worth it for much clarity
