Hi, is the first time that i post here. I live in Brazil and my enlgish is very poor. I'm studing how i'll get my gear, and i have some questions to do. For living in Brazil i can't make mistakes toi buy my gear, because its very difficult to sell saond gear here.

I'll buy a Edirol R-4 recorder, but many people said that they have bad pre amplifier. I dont have any gear yet. So i whant to know if is better buy a pre amp or a mixer to have a nice sound quality. Other thing that i was in dube, is the output of that mixers. For exemple: The edirol R-4 have 4 channels with idependent mics preamp. how can i get the same thing or 3 chennels independet in a mixer or pre amp, to send separented channels to R-4, more the 2.

thanks an sorry for my english!

What are you trying to accomplish with the audio gear that you want to purchase? Do you plan on using it for production sound or do you want to use if for field recording and FX gathering? Also what is your budget?

I'll use the gear to field and production, But Edirol r-4 and the mixer or pre amp , i'll go to use more in field. I have $6,000 - $6,500 to buy my fisrt gear. This is the list below:

Mackie_ONYX_1620 ----------------------------------------$849
Edirol_Roland_R4----------------------------------------------$895
M-Audio-Firewire-1814----------------------------------------$339
Neumann_KMR_82--------------------------------------------$1599
Countryman_B6------------------------------------------------$307
Sennheiser MKH-50-

------------------------------------------------------$1396
Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro ---------------------------------------------$183
Azden Dual Channel Camera Mount Wireless Microphone System---$599

More a Mixer or a pre amplifier to use with edirol r-4. That have to coast $300 to $400

When you're field recording, you're definitely not going to want to have that big bulky Onyx mixer to lug around; it's just not practical. You'd be better off getting a portable mixer like something from Sound Devices. It costs more, but it'll last you a long time and you'll get a much better sound. Also, why do you have the M-Audio device on your list? Do you also plan on doing some editing and mixing?

The DT 770 Pro's are very nice headphones, but I think they might be too much in the field. You'd might be better off getting something like the standard Sony MDR 7506, which are cheaper.

And finally, while I'm sure the Neumann is a very nice mic, you might also want to consider the Sennheiser MKH 416 or 418. I've been talking to an FX recordist and he swears by them.

Hopefully some other people on the board who have a bit more experience with production mixing can give their point of view.
