So i'm thinking of taking the leap and moving over to FCP from Premiere. Now, i've priced out a mac on macs site and its bloody expensive. So for kicks i looked on ebay and i found this.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mac-Pro-dual-quad-2-93ghz-16gb-4-tb-ati-free-shipping_W0QQitemZ120478520864QQcategoryZ111418QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3907.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DSIC%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%252BDDSIC%26otn%3D12%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D54

there is another unit hes selling for even cheaper 3999 with the same stats.

now my question is, what do you guys think of this. Is it possible that this is a legit(i know his feedback is good) MAC. I dont normaly question ebay but this seems like hell of a deal.

LEt me know what you guys think of this

I did email him so i'm waiting on a reply

cheers

Hes sold a few expensive mac products, however one thing I do notice is his way of getting feedback. Look past the first few past feedbacks, past the macs. They are all those scam ebooks that people sell for .05 cents just to boost their feedback.
So yeah after going past the about 5 expensive products recently sold, there is nothing expensive until the item history is cleared.
Just my two cents.

Maybe I'm wrong but it doesn't seem like that great of a deal to begin with. You can get a stripped down 8-core and put in your own RAM (you probably don't need 16Gigs of RAM anyway) and HDDs for about that. MAybe less, but I haven't done the math. Go to Mac mall and go interest free for 6 months and get your RAM from a place like Crucial or OWC.

Then you are dealing with a legit dealer if there any problems.

I agree with Jim that this does not look like that good a deal. If the processor speed in fact is 3 Ghz, that would mean that this is not even the current generation of MacPro, which maxes out at 2.93 Ghz (the current MacPros have higher performance but lower processor speeds than the last generation). If this is the previous generation machine, it would be about 2 years since it was first introduced. If that is the case, I would pass on this one.

i looked on macs site and it seems like its a current setup that the ebay auction has

the price diference between the ebay and retail is quite larg.. @ least 3 grand.... for the same thing. I did email him to find out what the deal is... i'm not one to rush into anything, i just wanted to post up to get soem feedback to see what you guys think of this.

I know that i can get reg sata drives and throw them in, not sure about RAm tho between the MAc and Pc(but i think that can be also done)

Not sure how all the specs shake out, but I just wanted to clarify that I was referring to Mac Mall, not the Mac web store.

Never buy more than you have to directly from Mac. That alone will save you a boat load of cash. If I had bought my RAM from Mac it would have cost me hundreds more than getting it from OWC.

thanks jim thats what i'm thinking.... if you dont mind ...what type of ram did you get for your mac that was compatible etc...
idealy i'd like to get a close to stock mac and just upgrade all the stuff on my own such as HD and RAM, not sure what else is upgradable....i think the processor might not be.....i dont know

how much difference is there really between the 2.6 and 2.9 processor when it comes to editing, will there be a substantial speed increase? Does FCP even utilize all the cores?

FCP is not really maximized for all cores. There are some tutorials around to take better advantage of having them though. Snow Leopard might be better at this, but I haven't upgraded yet.

I bought my RAM from OWC

They should have a chart to check what RAM is right for your system. What I got doesn't really matter because it probably isn't right for yours.

As far as whether you can tell the difference betwen a dual quad 2.9 and 2.6, I would say yes, if you ran them side by side. But unless you are doing a ton of multi-format, RAW or HD stuff I am guessing that you won't notice much of a difference. Having enough RAM is probably more important. Although I doubt you will need more than 8 gigs unless you are running a bunch of different apps at once.

yah....

i even thought of buidling a hackintosh ..lol.... would save quite a bit of $$ but its still a buggy venture.... not all components work with eachother etc etc...

with pc's i update every 3 years.. i'd hate to update a mac in that time...it wouldnt be cost effective, unless the jobs are coming in..

It's a scam. Big time!

The seller placed fake auctions for the $8,000 and $5,000 Mac Pro's in an effort to hook people in on the $4,000 one.

GottaBeTheJuice spotted the first red flags and if you check out the 3 buyers who bought the last 6 big ticket items (vhenry11, amalaxi, ovahdatop) you'll see that they too have purchased A LOT of those ebooks. Also, A LOT of the members who left feedback for them are no longer registered (even though they had recent purchases). Another red flag is that their comments are made in the same style (*****FIVE ***** STAR ***** EBAYER, etc.) A clear sign that it's one person with multiple accounts.

Another clue is that this ebay seller recently sold (but not really) an $8,000 Mac Pro with 32gb of RAM to vhenry11, who also bought an extra 32gb of MAC RAM for $2,000 from the same seller. That's $10,000 coming from an ebayer who previously only bought .99 cent ebooks. LOL

If you buy it please do it under the context of totally screwing with the seller. He deserves it. :)

yah.... hopefully no one got scammed.. also when i looked @ the member profile it says he was member since 2001 thats a long time to be a member to run a scam so many years after.... anyway... as always if its too good to be true it probably is...

Great work, I didn't really delve that deep into the feedback like you did, didn't think to. But yeah eBay needs to crack down on those scam ebooks somehow. I imagine they are getting a fair amount of people with these scams. Like those nigerian million dollar emails, they arent even 99% successful! Less than 1% of the people reply with personal information (supposedly) but there sending scam emails to millions and millions of people, 0.5% of millions of people is still a lot of people.

Anyways.
Another case solved by DVXuser. :costumed-smiley-047
