Eastman Kodak top earner... is film dead?

A couple of years back a producer I was shooting a film for told me the Kodak rep said they were selling more film than ever (or something very much like that).

I'm not sure how that's possible.

As for the stock market, they laid off like three or four thousand employees between 2009 and 2010 as far as I know, so that might have a lot to do with it.

.

Kodak sells film (lots of it for release prints, probably not so much for cameras nowadays) but they also sell printers, digital cameras, they make advanced CCD and CMOS sensors... it's a big business with lots of lines.

I wouldn't be surprised that they are selling more film. The vast majority of work is still done on film. I have no numbers but I wouldn't be shocked to find out that there are just more productions out there overall thus making all sorts of film/digital sales go up. Granted this is all speculation.

Well, one of the reasons that they are selling more film, at least in the post production world of .... is that they have to print for both L and R eye for 3D distribution. Everything major being released is being shot and/or printed for 3D. That's double the amount of print stock and sometimes (if digital originated, being shot out on film camera stock) camera stock.

Is it possible that they have only lost a small market of film makers to shooting digitally, or, in other words, digital video technology opened up more individuals to shooting than they've potentially lost?
