Saturday there was a decent sized earthquake here. Not the biggest I've been in, but not bad, either. So far about $30 million in damages is estimated for just this city. Made for some pretty cool videos, too. I'll link my favorite at the bottom.
Anyway, there were a couple things I thought were interesting. First, it started with a single jolt. After about a second, maybe two, the serious shaking started for half a minute. That second in between is where the drama happened. It's where I wake up and consider what's going on before it feels like the house is going to fall on top of me. Yeah, I was asleep at four thirty, that's not the point. It's the moment of realization between seeing the ripples in the water and seeing the dinosaur. It's the time between calling your friend in the other room, who you just heard making noise, and realizing no one's answering for a good reason.
Action is good and setup is good, but that moment really showed me where the drama is. That in between before the storm hits is the most important part. I guess I always knew that, but the meaning really hit home this week.
I also had a good look at the massive power of nature. This may be one of the best places to see it. I went to the water just after (apparently I don't understand how tsunamis work), where I saw the incredible calm contrasting with my police scanner going nonstop. And I could see the ocean further out, incredible power that has killed many. Not to mention our trees our huge and imposing, far outdoing anything human.
There isn't really a discussion here. I just had some thoughts to type and it's a good excuse to not be working on important stuff. Here's one of my favorite videos of the day:
