Earth Zoom Effect

where can i get the satelite images (high res) to do the earth zoom effect like in andrew kramers tutorial? when using the google map version it doesnt seem to give you a large enough version for a project in 720

I did a project like this 2 years ago and we used 100% Google-served satellite imagery. We had number of different core resolutions/zoom levels that we arbitrarily chose; we took screen shots of the satellite images and tiled them together into massive single images in Photoshop, one for each zoom level. We'd do a fast crossfade between the levels as the camera switched from zooming into one level and then going to another. I think we had about 6 levels of distinct imagery...it was pretty time consuming but the final result showed no visible handoff from one zoom layer to another, and worth the effort given the fact that the satellite assets were free.

so did you just punch in an address on the map section of google and take screenshots of each zoom level? i was trying to get each of those zoom levels in a large enough format for a project in 720....should i just scale them up slightly instead of looking for high res images?

atomick,
that's a helpful hint: using multiple Google Earth screen shots at relatively close zoom to assemble your big layers.

But how did you deal with the varying image quality on Google Earth? Did you just get lucky and choose a region with good image quality?

Every time I've tried to do this with Google Earth images, I'm confounded by that fact that Google Earth looks like patchwork with colorful, clear imagery right next to a bunch of stripes of fuzzy images from a lesser satellite or taken in bad weather...

I guess you could do a huge amount of "rubber stamping" and Photoshop doctoring if the bad stripes are in non-essential areas. Sounds like a lot of work, though.

Any tricks?

just did the same thing with Google Earth pics, it isn't high res but it shouldn't be too much of a problem with all the motion going on in the video
