E-Mail Advice Needed

I am leaving AT&T/Yahoo! service and it appears as though my e-mail account through them is going to be shut down in 30 days. I do have webmail through my company (Squirrelmail - sucks), as do my employees, but I have everybody set up to use their mail address through a AT&T/Yahoo! account (so that we can use it for our old personal accounts, too). I did find out that I can archive my Yahoo!Mail messages, so that's cool. My question is, where do I go from here? Here's what I need:

I need to be able to have it appear as though my sent messages are coming from a echopro.net e-mail address.
I need to be able to import those archive folders from my old account
I need to be able to access it from anywhere

WWYD?

I think most hosting companies offer e-mail hosting that doesn't require site hosting. That is, you can register a domain name and get an email package without having to have an actual site hosted. For example, I have "crushedcreative.com" registered but forwarded to my jasonfox.net site. I used to have an email account set up with it for like $20 a year that included scads of addresses. Can't remember who I used, though, but it shouldn't be hard for you to find. Best of all, you never have to worry about switching email addresses when you change broadband providers.

Charli - GMail was my next option...but I don't see a way to import folders into it. Does GMail even have folders?

Jason - I've already got the site hosting, and thereby the e-mail and webmail that goes with it. Comes with Squirrelmail, which is SLOW on the server that it's on, and it's a little clunky, too.

Thanks!

Yeah, squirrelmail blows. My old agency's hosting company used it. I don't know if you can just move your e-mail hosting. Probably not. Stupid technology.

If you've already got a host, getting a separate email host shouldn't be too tough. You'll need to ask your current host to change your MX record to point to your new email host. GMail is also an attractive option as you can just feed in your pop server info and use gmail as the client. Last I checked though, when you send a message from gmail it says "from bob@yourdomain.com care of bob1234@gmail.com"

Ewww...I did set up a GMail account, and I figured out that if you jump through a bunch of hoops (a la learn how to use a UNIX shell in OSX), you can get a program that uploads .eml archives to a GMail address.

Thanks for that warning Jake...I'm testing that out now.

Just FYI, I am going with the GMail route, but here's something interesting for all of you considering switching, but you want to take your old mail with you...

I tried a program called GMail Loader, but had no success with it. Then I tried using a IMAP process, but decided that I'm too stupid to do that. Then I found this thing called Google Mail Fetch. Basically, what it does is it pull new (unread) mail from your old e-mail's inbox and drop it in your GMail account. What's super handy is that it will retain the original e-mail's date, as well as the Sender's and To e-mail addresses. So, it really is like having your old e-mail's imported.

In a GMail account go to SETTINGS>ACCOUNTS>GET MAIL FROM OTHER ACCOUNTS and go through that setup. Then in your old e-mail select the messages that you want to transfer and make sure they're in your INBOX marked as UNREAD. I have a few folders so I would do one folder at a time, moving that folder's messages to the Inbox, marking them as unread, and after a few minutes they all popped in my GMail Inbox. Once the messages were copied, they were marked as READ in my old account...kind of handy.

Then in GMail again, I'd just label those messages according to the folders that they were in before, and I'm all set!

Gmail has a lot of cool features, i actully never send mail with the gmail.com address. I setup all my emails about 5 in total and just use it as a online outlook lol

I cant remember what the days before GMail where like...

Incorrect. It just says the address you intended to send from.
Well, it must be a setting somewhere, because as of 10 minutes ago, i get this:

j****@gmail.com on behalf of Jake Carpenter [j****@jakecarpenter.com]
It may also be a function of the mail client I sent it to, something with the headers.

I did see that Yahoo! will make a little entry BELOW the FROM address saying that it was really sent from GMail, but who cares? Before it would have said that I was using Yahoo, and I gotta think that GMail is more professional.

Hey Mike, you can get the yahoo enhanced email service, where you pay, I think, 15 bucks per year to have a pop3 account with them. That's what I do. That way I can check my yahoo email with a regular email program like Thunderbird.

It seems a little odd that you would have a domain with a hosting account and have to use a third party mail server. Isn't Squirrel Mail just a web mail interface? You can't use mail.yourdomain with your mail client? I'd be changing hosting providers.
