Dynamic Range breakthrough

Looks like digital now has a greater dynamic range than film. Quite the breakthrough in my opinion. Do you think any other cameras will come out this year with a dynamic range of 14 stops or greater other than something by Arri, RED, or Blackmagic? I'd love to see more dynamic range especially in the Blackmagic price range.

Well Sony, have only just announced their newest cameras, so we won't see any new higher-DR sensors from them for a while. Arri are no doubt working on something, but the Alexa is so dominant right now, I can't see it being superseded any time soon. Blackmagic barely have their camera out, so we also won't see anything new from them for a good while to come.

So in short, no, don't expect to see anything else for a little while yet (except maybe that new Panavision 70mm wunderkind).

That said, with the arrival of the F55 with its global shutter we finally have a camera that equals or bests film in virtually every objective sense (in a far smaller, lighter and cheaper package). So from here on out... it's all gravy.

It's a bloody exciting time to be making motion pictures for a living.
