Dynamic Link

Hi.

I've been having some dificulties with my workflow using Premiere and After Effects together.

This is my situation. I edit the movie in Premiere Pro CS3. I trim the shot I want to enhance in After Effects (CS3). It takes me a while, but finally it's perfect. I just use 2 seconds from the one minute original clip.
Now I want to do stuff with those 2 seconds in After Effects. So far, this is what I do:
in Premiere: FILE->ADOBE DYNAMIC LINK->NEW AFTER EFFECTS COMPOSITION...

After Effects gives me a new Composition, but without any files. So...

I have to find the original avi.

Import it to After Effects.

Fins the exact diration of the trimmed clip (in this example it's 2 seconds, but it could be 2 seconds and 3 frames)

Trim the After effects composition to my desired size

Find, again, the 2 seconds I wanted (and this is the particularly frustrating part, since i need frame presition)

and only then, can I start applying effects to the composition.

Then, I have to go back to premiere and delete the original trimmed clip and replace it with the Dynamic Link composition

So, Is there an easyer way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Much easier.

Just copy the clip as you're using it in the Premiere timeline, jump over to After Effects, and paste the clip into the Dynamically-Linked comp. The clip will automatically be imported into AE, those 2 seconds that you're using in PPro will be the active layer in the comp, but you'll also have access to all the rest of the media from the original media file. Do what you need to to the clip, and then jump back to PPro.

Then, instead of deleting the clip from the timeline, simply Alt+drag the DL comp on top of the original clip. Voila--round trip effected clip.

thanks. Al this time I was trying to copy the clip into the Project window instead of the timeline.

Life is good now
