Dynamic Link is giving me a Dynamic Headache

Hey guys,

I hope some one can help me with my dilemma. I can import an AE comp into Ppro CS3, but I can not get it to play back in real time.

AE Comp settings - DV - NSTC - 29.97 - 5 seconds
Ppro Settings - DV - NSTC - 29.97 - quality settings draft

Why is the AE comp sooooooooooo slow in Ppro. My computer specs are fairly decent, Core 2 Duo 2.4 - 4gb ram - Nvidia 8600GT.

Any help would be appreciated

From my limited experiences with Dynamic link...

You still need to render the clip in premiere to preview back in real time (i.e. hit the enter key).
It's treated just like any regular clip in your timeline that has effect applied to it.

The thing about Dynamic Link is that you use the whole AE comp as opposed to having to render out a final clip (as video) in After Effects then placing the final footage in the timeline.

If you need to make changes to that footage later on, you'd have to open up the AE comp, change it, re-export it as a video clip and replace it in Premiere.

With Dynamic link, you just open up the comp, make the changes then jump straight back into Premiere - if you want a real time preview - you still need to render a preview, but this is done in premiere... and only once :)

Thanks MasterP,

So once I render (hitting the return key) and close the program if I open Ppro again I will not have to re-render?

P.s

I heard you guys down there got a big earthquake, hope everything is fine?

If I work on something in AEFX that I need in Premiere I use an Intermediate workflow.

That is I Export the work in the comp as a unique (Intermediate) Clip from AEFX and import it back into Premiere.

MasterP, everytime I make a change to my AE comp, I have to unfortunatly re-render the comp again in Ppro for it to play back in real time, is there a work around for this?

Shooter, what is a intermediate workflow exactly? Do you mean you export it as a TIFF sequence?

thanks guys, I apperciate the help.

:Drogar-Shock(DBG): We did?? I didn't feel anything....
We get small earthquakes here pretty frequently - nothing big though

This is starting to get beyond my realms of knowledge here but
If you want guaranteed real time playback all the time, you will have to export a video clip from after effects (I believe that this is what Shooter is referring to) and import the clip into your timeline.

Premiere does store preview files (from when you hit the enter key) so in most cases it should still be fine once you reopen the project - if you make any changes to the clips in the timeline though (adding effects etc) you may need to re-render.
