Dying hard drive?

I'm editing with Premiere Pro CS5 (and After Effects CS5) with video files with all sorts of frame rates / resolutions.

I am editing on my laptop using an esata external drive with all the video files on that drive. My problem is that the drive keeps disconnecting when I'm trying to do certain things. Currently, I'm trying to output a section of what I have so far to see what it looks like, and whenever I try to output it, Premiere stays at 0% output and eventually the hard drive just disappears ! It then brings up that it can't find the video files (since the hard drive got disconnected?)

This really confused me. I thought it might be Premiere itself just being buggy, but then why would it cause the hard drive to disconnect? So I thought it might have been the hard drive / esata cable?
I just put in a song in Premiere and tried to output it, and it would crash (disconnect) again. I tried doing this without my external hard drive connected and it worked fine !

So I'm thinking that something is wrong with my external then? :(

Any help is greatly appreciated!

what are your laptop specs? what happens if you hook up the external drive using FW-800?
