Cheers.

Thanks so much for this. There were a couple threads I hadn't read and I now have a couple books to get. I would also add to the list the following

Breaking In: How 20 Film Directors Got Their Start
http://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Film-Directors-Their-Start/dp/0767906748

Making Movies - Sidney Lumet
http://www.amazon.com/Making-Movies..._bbs_sr_1/102-8706131-8331302?ie=UTF8&s=books

I don't have it, but the Hollywood Cameraworks DVD set gets a lot of press for help with camerawork and previz.

I also don't have it but I would think the DVD set by Rush would probably be helpful as well.

first thing i did was check to see if tarkovsky's 'sculpting in time' was listed. well done.

If I'm not familiar with tarkovsky's work would I still appreciate the book? Thx

It's a great book but it probably would help to know some of his work as a reference point. But you may want to check him out. He is the artist great filmakers like Kurosawa and Bergman look up to.

yeah, i don't think you need to see any of his films to appreciate his philosophies on filmmaking. but it can be a bit heady in places. there are concepts that i didn't fully comprehend until years later -- i make a point to re-read it once or twice a year. it's short.

it's also where i take the name of my production company, Sabi. for 'sabi', as tarkovsky describes it, is a word the japanese use to describe anything that is evidence of or captures the passing of time -- like wrinkles around the eyes, or an old worn wooden chair. the word is a fitting banner for my filmwork.

If I was to ever teach a filmmaking class, the two books I would make everyone read would be "The Film Form," and "The Film Sense," both written by Sergei Eisenstein.
