Does anyone else find the Search feature on this board annoying and unorganized? I always have such a hard time finding anything. I like the DVinfo search much much better than the one here.
The search features are weak. For starters--no boolean logic searches (like "lights NOT HMI"), no wildcards, the searches are slow, you can't just run a search and bring up threads and not individual messages. No sorting functions (!), no binning of search results (like Vivismo). You have to specify up front how many results you want (how would you even know how many messages need to display to find what you're looking for?) Inefficient search algorithms that load down the server (hence the default of only 7 days (!!). Unfortunately, you can't even do a google search on the archives. The search algorithms are crudely programmed and aren't good at discriminating between relevant and irrelevant results. The only reason I would ever advocate switching forum software is to implement a package that has first-rate search functions.
I agree. The search results feel sloppy. I'd rather have a simple interface where I can see the just the threads and not have to worry about it. Also Barry_S pretty much hit on most of the technical faults I'm talking about as well
Well, I know Jarred is not completely happy with the search functions, but the only alternative is switching the board software. It look like Jarred experimented with some other software while I was away on vacation, but there seemed to be some oppposition. Since I didn't see it, I have no idea if it had improved search funcions, but I appreciate the fact that switching the software would be an enormous hassle. Right now, I like to cut users some slack when they ask the same question for the 100th time because I figure it's a pain to do good searches. if we had a great search engine, I might be more inclined to go medieval on the clueless.

This happens sometimes when users get trapped inside the forum software. Don't shake too hard or you'll give them concussions! Eventually, they find their way out or they just dry out and blow away.
