DVXUser Scripwriting Challenge

This is JMHO so frame it or wipe your butt with it, which ever. I think I'm done with contests where the person running it is also in it. I'm also done with contests where the rules change mid-way through the contest and where the contestants vote. There's just something basically wrong with that. I am talking about this one but I have seen others run this way.

I thought the challenge was a good one. I don't think Rabiger added the exercise to his book on a whim. There is a lot to be learned from such an exercise. I don't think it makes a good contest though. What with all the geriatric characters I saw.

Hind sight.

I was going to participate, but do to life issues (my uncle almost died and is now in a coma) I was unable to.

I think the contest was ok the way you presented it, but I would actually prefer a simpler format. Something along the lines of giving a subject and a length limit (e.g. subject = summertime || limit = 5 pages, etc). I would say that 5 pages should always be the limit so it doesn't take too much time to read all the entries. Perhaps you could give the winner the choice of choosing the subject of the next round, like they do for the still photo contest.

Just a thought, take or leave at your whim. :)

Peace,
Larry

SOunds good Larry, and hope your Uncle comes through.

Well the voting time has ended. Time to add up the scores and find out where to send the prize. Plus, Jarred offered DVX TShirts to the top 10.

Regarding the contest itself, I personally did this for the experience of writing the scene, to see what other people would write, and to see what ideas would arise that could be produced for a short.

With those goals in mind, I'm very pleased. I'm happy with my own writing (this is the first scene I've written myself), and I think all the entries could be developed and produced.

Can anyone confirm if the polls have all ended before I work up the final scores.

I just looked at the polls and they all say they are closed, so I guess they have all ended :) I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to enter or to vote, but as I mentioned before I had a family crisis.

I would still like to read and offer comments on the pages, I'll try to do that this weekend.

I just found this thread and it looks to have lots of potential with a little bit of polishing... so what's the scoop?

Was it successful enough to warrant a second round?

I think simplifying the process of actually entering the contest as well as giving people juicy scenarios to write about would increase participation tenfold at least.

Anyone want to take a whack at organizing / runnint it? PM me and maybe we can organize a round 2.

I thought the first round went fairly well considering it was new and this is not one of the more frequented areas of the board. I know my comments regarding the "format" of the contest, and I assume the same for the others comments as well, was not a criticism on how the contest was run, but just people offering their thoughts/ideas after going through a round.

If you like the way it went, then continue to run it that way. I think it was pretty successful and the people that participated seemed to enjoye it.

If you are simply too busy to continue to put these on, then we should find someone to take it on as I think it is a worthwhile contest to have available, with or without prizes.

Thanks for your work on the first round of this competition...I'm looking forward to the next round.

Peace,
Larry

I think a simplier format is in order. Length of pages should all be equal.
Theme, props, location, whatever should all be the same. My son's creative
writing class they had to write a paper on one location and with one prop.
The location was grocery store and the prop was a lemon. I believe they
had 3 characters.

One gal made it a rom com, another a drama, my son turned it into a spy
thriller, so it really took off some amazing tangents.

Well, that's how I would do it.

Honest answer: I'm buried with work right now. I'd love to see another round, but I really need someone to help organize / run it.

if no one has already stepped up to take over then I would be willing to help out. Just let me know and we can work out the details in PM.

Hi everyone,

Sorry, I can't help out this round, I just moved and everything is in boxes plus I just started a new job. But as soon as I'm settled, I'd be happy to help out on the 3rd round.

cheers

JP
