DVXUser Scripwriting Challenge

As I'm looking over the setups and contemplating my own, I think that although we should certainly try to follow the setup as closely as possible, if you have a great idea that differs only slightly in some of the lesser details, then go for it.

Still working on solutions for judging and commenting... unfortunately, Jeremy's solution is not available, and I simply don't have time to build a system for this.

Anyone have any suggestions, know of any ready made solutions that we can use?

Ideally, it would support voting, ranking, and some degree of anonymity.

Encrypt the post numbers so only one person holds the key. Have that one person make a new thread for each entry. Copy and paste the script (no names). Lock the threads. Make "one post to rule them all" with a poll line for each entry. Restrict each IP address to one vote.

Maybe create a new sub-forum for this or stick it in the contest forums. I count 16 entries right now. Seems very managable to me.

Take the winning script, pass out the prize, make a new contest where everyone makes a film of the same script. Limit the time to one minute over what the original criteria for the script was so you give directors time to flirt with scenes and add stuff but NOT take away. The dialog has to be word for word except you can add, not delete dialog.

The winning author and the winning director each get mass quantities of kudos (or what have you).

Just a thought.

seed #?

seed #?

Hey guys,

Sounds like a very cool exercise. Excuse my ignorance, but I'm confused on how to get the random generated seed#.

thanks in advance,

JP

The message number of your post, found by mousing over the #43, is: 655642.

Follow the link in the first post, use that as your seed, your age and gender, and generate your setup. Then edit your message (#43) and paste in the setup that you were given.

Then hurry up and get writing. You only have til Friday night!

Excellent, thanks!

Some things came up recently and I am dropping out, regretfully.

Sorry. You will not be blessed with a story of a 65 year old female detective getting the last bus out of town with two lines of dialog. :(

Okay, I think I've got it after reading the thread, just one question.

What is "discontinuous long overall time"?

thanks!

Oh,

And what does "one third in" mean? Is that where the plot point should be?

thanks,

JP

Discontinuous long overall time means: the scene runs x minutes, but spans a longer time, perhaps and hour, or a day, or several days, or even several years. The timeline is not continuous, and it covers a longer time than the running time of the scene.

1/3 in means the crisis occurs 1/3 in, leaving 2/3 for the resolution.

OK, I finished mine, so now I'm going to figure out how to set up a judging site.

My first thought is: Everyone email your script to me as either a PDF or a RTF file (or plain text).

I will put them on my web server, linked to a list, and everyone can read them and send comments (by number). and rate them by number.

I dont have a slick system like Jeremy does, so we'll have to do it the old fashioned way, counting ballots.

Once the comments are all in, I'll tally the votes and announce a winner.

You can start sending me the scripts as soon as they're ready.

Yes. I'm finished. Where to submit? Sorry, but can I ask that you (500lb productions) to submit your final script to an unbias 3rd party to ensure version accuracy. I dont mean to imply you would cheat by changing it upon possibly seeing perhaps other have a higher quality (also may not be the case), but I think it would be in your best interest to ensure there is no come back for anyone later on. I mean it's not like anyone else can see other submissions before submitting their own.

A couple of other suggestions:

Can we make it that everyone needs to place the details of their seed on the title page of their submission so voters can see them before voting and in turn can the voters be directed to read this carefully. As they may not know the rules of how the seed works, seeing mine without dialogue people may wonder why.

Lastly could we get perhaps a sticky in the cafe for the voting time period so we can get a little more attention for the effort we put in to this?

Cheers
NCJE

Also man without dialogue that was difficult. :P

I ADDED SUBMISSON INSTRUCTIONS TO MESSAGE #1 IN THIS THREAD.

Sorry for the delay, I had expected to use the forum "send an email" but that won't work for the contest.

The way I expect to do the judging:

For each entry (by #), send an email to me including: Your comments and your vote.

For each entry I will maintain an excel workbook with the comments and the votes. This workbook will be posted on the site when the voting ends, and the votes and the comments will be posted anonomously.

Send in your entries as soon as you have them finished, so I can work on the voting links. However, I won't release anything until the deadline friday night.

Unfortunately, since the setups are unique for each writer, perfect anonymity isn't possible. But hopefully we can read and judge fairly without looking up the setups to ID the writers.

This is, after all, more in the spirit of fun and learning than a cutthroat competition. Right? Right? :-)

Whatever submission I receive first, I will reply and send mine in return.

Except that would end anonymity for that one. Hmm. What to do?

ok, I'll send it to Jeremy just for safe keeping.

I submitted mine to your email last night (Tokyo time). Did you get it OK?

EDIT: Per your pm I sent it again...
