DVXuser member created BarBallz app - Free Download for 4 Days!

Charli

cool little "title"
One of our very own DVXuser long time members created a fun game called:

Barballz - Free download for 4 days here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/barballz/id631240120?ls=1&mt=8

In a press release it stated that, "BarBallz ™ is the next evolution of the game “Truth or Dare,” but much of the focus is on the dare aspect here. The result is people choosing to do things that they would not normally do. So we designed the game so you can still play and have fun and win points for being less adventurous- just fewer points!"

You play the game at a bar and the dare/tasks levels from easy, medium, to hard such as:

Ask the server if they are married” (easy) to “Do the Macarena for 30 seconds. Do NOT sing or hum the song while doing it” (medium) to “Find someone unknown to you in the bar who will return to the table with you and sit on your lap” (hard).

I say CONGRATS to our DVXuser for coming up with a game that's a riot to play and it's FREE for you guys to dowload on iTunes for the next few days. It's a great way to liven up the party at a bar!!!

But it's free only for a short time and I wanted to make sure our DVXusers knew about it first! Download away!

Seriously? I'm rather insulted by this spamming, hurriedly slammed together in as much of a generic way as possible that, in my opinion, shows contempt for this community.

Holy smokes. I had an idea like that some time ago.

Considering that one of the developers of this app is mentioned here as an editor for Dahopa films, I would assume that this is you or someone else associated with this. Further reason why I think this is really poor.

Dahopa films has been a long time user of this community. I never wrote a short film for him. Never did any work for him. We just got along and are friends, as I am friends and friendly with many of our community members. I was unsure if he wanted me to mention his name or not, he is modest, but he did ask me to spread the word.

This game app was developed by one of our own. Our family of DVXuser members. Someone who is well respected and if you've seen any of his films at the DVX Fest, simply hilarious! "Bucket Man" and "Spies Girls" were killer shorts.

I have ZERO association with this app. Didn't even know about it until a few days ago. I can't download it because I own a Kindle, but I've read enough about it and know enough about Brian that this app would be crazy fun. I have absolutely nothing to gain.

Because the application is FREE for the next 4 days, Brian has nothing to gain. I informed this community about this venture because it was free. If you had to pay for it, I would not have posted, now that would have been spam.

I think it's very cool when one of our members accomplishes something unique. Brian is FREELY sharing his new venture with anyone who wants it for the next four days. Should not the community he was such a strong part of have the opportunity to get it free?

You assumed wrong. Gary, in this forum we all support and care for each other (some more than others if I'm am to be truthful). I care for Brian and wish him great success. If you can download this app, then try it out. It's from our family and it's free.

Why would owning a Kindle stop you? This is an iPhone app.

iTunes lists the current Top Grossing Apps as Candy Crush Saga, Clash of Clans, Pandora Radio, Hay Day, and MARVEL War of Heroes...all of which are "free" apps.

Come on Gary. A fellow DVX'er shares about something another DVX'er does and they want to give it away for free. To you, that's spam? I think its cool to hear people are not only creating something but are willing to give it away, on top of it.

I just wish I had an iPhone OR a Kindle.......LOL. I'd get the app. Because looking a gift horse in the mouth is kinda rude.

Oh my. I dropped back in on this and discovered a bit of a tussle. At the risk of coming to the defence of a long time DvxUser who needs no defence from me, perhaps I can jump in here and deal with a few facts.

1. They say that no good deed goes unpunished. I believe this old maxim to be true. Sadly.
2. Indeed, it is I who has had a hand in this iPhone game. I mentioned it to Charli in passing (we keep in touch because I like her and, frankly, she is very, very talented) and she said she would spread the word. When she told me she had mentioned it on DvxUser I smiled and thought I would drop in after far too long an absence and see what my friends and others were up to here. Hence my (intended amusing) response in reply and my revisit now.
3. Everything Charli has said in her reply is accurate. She has no role in my company nor in relation to this game. She is not compensated in any way. In fact, she seems to be paying a bit of a price for being a friend.
4. Undoubtedly most or all of what Gary has said is also accurate except that I confess that I do have a natural aversion to self-appointed Hall Monitors. Thus whilst much of what Gary has said may be accurate (particularly the bit about him being insulted), I am afraid that much of the negative reaction is based upon incorrect assumptions. Which I shall now attempt to clarify: (a) the game (which I shall not name here for fear of causing revulsion or further insult) is indeed free. But not after four days, so forget the whole thing after that period lapses; (b) there is no advertising attached to the game whatsoever in any form. The games Gary refers to are not in that category. It is a pillar of the approach we have taken to our game development that once you get a game from me, you get the full version - no ads, additional buys, tracking or pop-ups. Like the old days. So we may not make the kind of money made by the games Gary refers to, but we will have had fun and kept our principles intact; (c) I really like this game. I am proud of it. The most gratifying thing is to see how others have played it and enjoyed it. When Charli mentioned that she had let the DvxUser community know about it I was pleased because a long time ago in a Galaxy far far away I spent a lot of time here. I learned a lot on the creative side. Jarred filmed my first short (what ever happened to that guy, anyway?). It was a fun time in my life and I met many great people here - many of whom I still stay in contact with. So if my old friends could be alerted to find some enjoyment in something I created - and clearly far more than most of the shorts I entered in the various contests - then perfect!

But not so perfect because we seem to have rankled someone and that was never the intention.

Whoever the moderators are now, please accept this longwinded message as an invitation to take this thread down. There was never any intention to advertise and if others view it as Gary does, then please in all fairness shut it down. I think it should be shut down after the free download period expires because at that point an argument would exist that this thread does point to a commercial venture. If deleting the thread is considered appropriate, then I offer apologies (not for Charli, who needs to offer none - but just for myself).

So in any event, my best regards to all of you who recognise my user name and avatar. Many changes have occurred since I first started coming here in 2005. I live in a different country. I take on many things of interest - the names of which many would recognise but none of which I can discuss. All are fulfilling. I have filmed no "purely for fun" shorts in a long time (sighs of relief come from those who remember Contraband). The beautiful, wonderful dog pictured in my avatar is long gone but, just as my feelings for DvxUser and its members, the good feelings and memories remain.

I wish you all well and remain grateful for good and great friends like Charli who try to do a nice turn for a friend with no expectations in return. DvxUser is an important place from which good things have grown. Protect it. It is special - even if you do not perceive that right now. In the future you will look back on it with warmth and good feelings too.

Cut.

Yes, many free game apps out there, but this one was created by our own DVXuser family, that is what makes it different.

Yes, I own a Kindle, but the requirements for the game require a type of Apple product. I have none, zero, zilch. Reason I mentioned Kindle is because it does allow for some android apps and such, but not this one. My phone is one of the original Razr phones, yeah, that far back with no media service.

As far as getting smacked a bit here by Gary, I remember each time I gave frank and honest feedback at the DVXfest, it wasn't always a very pleasant reply.

Barballz is free for only four days. Like Brian said, after that, delete the thread because then it's no longer free. But why deny hundreds of members in this community to freely download this game app that was developed by a member of this community?

I say how awesome we are so uniquely creative!

I'm not trying to be difficult, but a lot of things stood out to me in the first post, the heavy press release quoting which showed no personal experience with the app, and the references to an unnamed "DVXUser" which seemed ridiculous in its ambiguity. That, coupled with Brian's response (from an account that hasn't been very active since 2007) struck me as an attempt to use the board to generate buzz for an app that was "free". My first reaction was that your account was hacked, but since I saw that you had a history with the developer I figured it was legitimate.

While you may not care for "self appointed Hall Monitors", I certainly don't care for people who are full of ****, and express my opinion when I believe someone is currently being that. My B.S.-o-meter may be sensitive to a fault, and in this case it looks like it was a false alarm, and so I apologize.

Gary - we're family. Family disagree. In the end, it's all good. Btw, I use to live in Texas so I understand the "don't BS me" attitude. Like I said, it' all good.

A few additional thoughts.

1. I'm going to leave this as a free game for the next week or so. Response has been great so we're happy to wait for more users to give feedback before making it a paid App.

2. Here's where DvxUsers might have some interest. I can't say much now (in fairness to all) but I learned a lot here and enjoyed the Festivals. I am thinking of doing a similar thing - a competition - to produce a short about the game. No need to buy anything. Just make a cool short about playing the game. We'll establish the rules later, but I do have in mind a pretty terrific prize for the winner. Just a heads up for now to my friends here. Formal word will come in due course.

Best to all.
