dvxuser banned on CreativeCow?

I first came here to find out about the DVX100 but I come back because of the great interaction of the members. I just sold my DVX it served me well for many years. Now I have two Sony V1 and I really like these cams but they do not foster the emotion the DVX did. I have looked around for a place like this that revolves around the V1, BUT THERE IS NO SUCH PLACE. So I just keep coming here.

Sorry to reply late to this thread -- I took a few days off. Also, please excuse what might appear to be any commercial aspects of this, absolutely not intended. Just trying to quickly answer some questions.

1) Any and all DVX users are welcome at CreativeCOW.net. One of the senior members here at DVXusers.com, Shane Ross, is among our most respected leaders and most prolific posters at CreativeCOW.net. In the past 14 days, he's posted 141 times in 8 communities, most frequently in the HVX-HPX (P2) and Final Cut Pro communities -- both which he's a leader in.

2) Greetings Ronbo: over 90 Sony V1U posts in the past 14 days. Of course, with 150 active communities, the conversations are kind of spread around. There are indeed only a handful of posts about the V1U in the Sony community, but there are dozens in the HDV community, and plenty in other COW communities including Premiere Pro, Canon, Indie Film, and Sony Vegas.

If you start your own threads, I can assure you that you'll get answers. (Especially if you start in the HDV community, one of our most active.)

3) While we're talking traffic, the past two weeks have seen over 160 posts re: HVX/DVX, across 20 forums. Nowhere near the traffic here, of course. But just as we consider DVXuser.com an important part of a balanced production diet, we think http://www.CreativeCOW.net is too.

4) In addition to over 100,000 active members to serve as resources for you (and 450,000-ish visitors monthly), we have over 800 tutorials that we invite you to read, and repost on your own websites as you see fit. (No commercial re-use, and please just let us know so that we can link to you.)

More than a few of these are P2 specific, but we've got several on the Z1U coming up, including an article by Mike Schell at Convergent Design on HDMI workflows.

5) I personally apologize for any and all problems that anyone here has had with The COW in the past. Rather than reply any further here, please contact me directly.

The best way is to call my mobile phone: 617 947 4733. I'll gladly call you back on my dime. You can also email me your number -- I'll call anywhere in the world to talk to you. Or you can email me just to email me :-) tim@creativecow.net.

All the best,
Tim Wilson

I also appreciate the post.

But as David pointed out, it didn't address the fact that (supposedly) no one would be able to go to the Cow and make a post linking back to DVXuser the exact same way you just did linking back to Creative Cow, which is somewhat ironic.

We know you don't mind us stopping by the Cow, and thanks again for extending the welcome, it's the virtual gag order on posts which contain references to other forums that gives us pause.

Thanks again for your post, if you have further thoughts on the matter, they would be most welcome.

EDIT: This just struck me as ironic too:

If this is how you feel, that DVXuser is a part of the "balanced production diet" just like Creative Cow, why would people be hindered from getting that nourishment (to extend your metaphor) i.e., information they may need, on your forum?

Thanks again, Tim.

Ban him!

I think it's incredibly shameful, really. Not only what they're doing in terms of filtering posts... but that above post which serves only to be a commercial for creative cow, despite what you may preface it as.

Creative cow for the lose.

*removes creative cow from bookmarks*

Have they gone so far as to forbid "deeeveeeX (delete all the e's!)" from posts?

It's like trying to keep down a religion.. you just push it into taboo. You just send the guy a private message about dvxuser & the guy wonders "why the hell is it forbidden?" Soon the dvxusers are worshipping in private. What a bureaucratic bullshit thing to do. PT Barnum had a saying about publicity that goes like this:

"I'll never say another word to anybody about said website."

wow talk about fireworks for the 4th

I totally get where you guys are coming from and share most of your sentiments, but maybe since this is a recent development we could hold off on flaming the Cow, or letting the thread get too volatile.

It would be cool if Tim felt comfortable enough to come back here and discus it, or even say "we didn't think it was a big deal when we put the filters in, but we hear ya, give us some time to take them down." (I can dream :) ) Or maybe just to explain himself better with less pimping.

I'm no mod or anything, and I've made my fair share of jokes in the thread, so feel free to ignore me, but maybe if we can hold off on the torches and nooses for now, maybe this is something that can just turn into a blip on the radar screen rather than a film forum jihad.

We know things have gone too far when "Mr. Excitable" has become the voice of reason.
I couldn't agree with you more Jack.

Hopefully we can keep the flames down low.

I never liked Creative Cow's policies nor their hard-to-navigate forums.

I remember the owner going ballistic when Apple started charging point upgrades to Mac OSX. He wrote a strong diatribe railing against Apple -- which me being a big Apple fan, was a total turnoff. Anyway, I still visit the site for FCP info because of all the knowledgeable folks. 2-pop used to be the place to go for FCP help but they too shot themselves in the foot.

Now! Pimp free!

Now! Pimp free!

We didn't think it was a big deal when we put the filters in, but they've been down for a while now.

As you point out, this is indeed a recent development, and I went on at (much too much) length about it in the link you cite.

The primary intent of (most of) the pimping in my previous post was to offer specific evidence that DVXusers are welcome, and are already contributing in major ways at The COW. (The other part was because pimping comes naturally. Oops. Hopefully pimp free now.)

The "link back" the policy's goal is NOT to force linkbacks from everyone. The policy was enacted AFTER commercial entities kept visiting for the sole purpose of announcing themselves, but not using their expertise to contribute to any problem-solving.

(The worst culprits, btw: VARs, which is why we call them out by name. Although there are plenty of VARs who do indeed use their expertise to help others than themselves.)

Otherwise, yes, this principle was applied too broadly in the past.

To be clear: for folks here participating in on-topic discussions at The COW, link away. No links back requested. There's a bunch of great stuff here to link to.

That said, cross-posting articles here also to The COW will help us to drive more traffic here than links alone. But your call.

My request to take this conversation offline is solely to ensure the same high signal here that we like to see at The COW. Please don't take my not replying further as anything but that. Putting my cell phone number (617 947 4733) in every post is an indication of my availability to anyone to talk about this, any time at all. It's coming up on 3 AM here in Boston, and my phone is on until I hit the hay.

To summarize: every DVXuser is welcome at The COW. Links back to DVXuser.com are welcome at The COW, with the sole request that the links be "on topic." I have no doubt that this will be the case, which is why I so heartily solicit them.

(I think of solicitation as the opposite of pimping, even if the police seem to generally disagree.)

In the meantime, I've written way too much already. You're all welcome to have the last word on this here.

If you're burned out and don't want to visit The COW again, I'd like you to reconsider in light of requested changes being implemented in a timely manner.

If you DO head back, I expect to hold my feet to the fire if I fail to meet your standards in any way. You have my phone number and email address to get started.

Best,
Tim

PS. We don't like The COW interface either. We've just hired a new code jockey to build COW 2.0 for us, with new looks and new features. I don't have any timeframes yet -- stuff we already have needs attention too -- but we want it as much as any of you do. Plenty of good info there in the meantime.

Pimping. Oops. Returning you now to your regularly scheduled DVX-ing.

and there's that :)

thanks tim.. your solicitish post Ill let run just for good old times sake.. and sorry but i gotta remove your link from your username, its a little overboard, if not a little ironic considering the circumstances.

I still find this whole thing very scum-ish, to be honest. But whatever.

I hate the board interface there as well.

I actually came over to edit my user name just now, but I wanted to make sure to put a bulls eye on myself first. :-)

And links, articles, etc from here reallly are welcome at....that site.....

thx,
tw

Tim and others -

Once I got into Vegas many years ago my first link was to Creative Cow to learn how to use it. I'm still there and it is the usually the first place I go to this day to get answers to my questions. I have yet to fail to get a great answer practically within minutes of asking. I have tried a couple of other forums when I have questions but it was always hit and miss with answers. I personally do not find the interface hard to navigate but I'm use to it. In my humble opinion, I do - and I may get flamed here - find this interface hard to navigate. I find it hard to find threads and I have to scroll to look at the forums. I much prefer having the forums listed to one side aka Cow approach so I can cut down on excess hand motions. With that said, I visit DVXuser regularly and it is my favorite site for learning about my Panasonic camera and how to use it.

Have a great day.

well there you have it

can't get much clearer / better than that

I think I am a member at Creative Cow - I get the magazine but I don't think I've ever posted. In any case, I'll probably be checking it out the forum more now.

Thanks Tim.

Awhile back somebody asked a question on the C4D forum on the cow. Someone responded by posting a link to a tutorial on C4D cafe that specifically addressed the problem. Kathy L. (owner) got on the C4D forum and flamed about how the practice of posting links to other sites drove people away from their site. I don't know how to describe her tirade other than to say it was pure insanity. I think Ron and Kathy both have a bad case of Mad Cow disease. They are too close to it. The site and their own health would benefit if they stepped away from it and let somebody else manage (and improve) the beast. Think about it, they could stay home having tea and biscuits. Once a month they would get a check in the mail from all the ad revenue from their site.

Hi,

now first off I enjoy a few forums on the net. This one obviously the best when it comes to my camera the HVX200, and others better at other interests.

Now different forums have different strengths and weakness points, thus why we like to participate in a few forums on the net.

I think most forums intent is to offer a place where people can learn from and share information with each other.

Once I tried posting a link to a dmn site tutorial to help someone, I got the famous "technical error" cow error, I emailed the Cow, and I received a reply from them about how they would not allow links to that site because they had a fall out with the dmn owner.

Now I say this with respect, and I am not trying to be nasty, but, we are all adults here, let's face it, we are not the only person doing what we do, and we are certainly not the only one that can do it well.

Is it really the end of the world if a user clicks on a link to a competitor to view a tutorial or advice their?

Are you so insecure about your product that you think they will never return?

I'm pretty sure that most people frequent most of the popular forums including the cow because it is a great resource, but again, it has it's strengths and weaknesses, and they don't just stop visiting the Cow just because another site had an answer ready for a particular situation.

This is my opinion, and I say again, I mean all respect to the cow since I have been helped there many times.

It's just my thoughts.

thanks,
Derrick

I believe Tim has already addressed the issue, and has made it clear that these filters are no longer in place and that links to other forums are welcome on the Cow.
So there isn't much point in continuing to debate the merit of a policy which has already been revoked and apologized for.

It seems that at this point we might be..... (wait for it).... beating a dead cow.

I couldn't resist.

NOTE:
The above is only an attempt at very bad wordplay, and in no way meant as an insult to the COW.
No animals were harmed in the making of this post.
