DVXuser 3d short collaboration

Drew Ott

Wish I were banned.
As some of you may know, in the 3d section we are working on making a trailer. If it goes well we may turn it into a short film.

Anhar has done some great stuff so far, but has left it up to the writers of DVXuser to work on, well... writing it.

Here's the link to the thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=96539

Here is a link to the storyboard/pre-viz:

and here is the video of the pre-viz: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW0OpNpWcpw

Let's get to brainstorming and try to make this the best we can.

Hey dudes,

well if that's the trailer, I can't see a reason to actually write anything until you decide on a short movie. As it stands, you can literally take what you have and get the live action and CG done; writing it won't really do much more than slow the effort down.

I think you guys should just do the visuals, then decide if you want to bring a writer in for a short venture.

Anhar-- nice work on the animatics. Much more visual storyboard and effective enough IMO.

I do agree Kholi.

It's just that we need some kind of story to base this off of. The trailer is for a bigger thing which we'd need to create. We're looking to collectively write the short to base these scene on.

That's why I had originally worded my post saying that we're making a "short film" instead of a "trailer". You can't really write a trailer.

hey thanks Kholi, I was just joking in the other thread that if the trailer got enough attention (when its finished) that we should make the whole short film :)

well, what I do need at least is some voice over (eg "this Summer..." type thing) along with some key dialouge, because in scene 1 and about 2 seconds of scene 2 would look weird without any dialouge.

And the voice over helps fill in the silence.

I tried comming up with lines, but its my lines are rubbish, basically the theme is Assassin breaking all the rules, don't know if that helps.

EDIT: as bballplayer mentions some kind of plot/ background story is needed to flesh it out better.

Ah I get what you're saying now. I wonder if you should make it a funny trailer? Add lines about chocolate and ballet shoes that make no apparent sense?

:) actually mutiple versions could very easly be made, because its all layered, all I'd have to do is change the voice over track, and shoot scene one with different dialouges.

very possible, kind of a spoof acton movie.

voice over:
"One man changed all the rules, .....he wore ballet shoes, "

Dialouge Scene 1:
"I want him dead, no one, no man, no beast, eats my prized choloate and lives..."

Yes, as you can see my attempts at lines are rubbish !! :)

But on a more serious note, how can I make the plot more action/thriller type thing?

cheers

See? It works perfectly. That way people know you aren't taking yourself too seriously and you're trying to cook up some decent visuals while practicing.

Honestly, do something fun and off-balance with serious visuals. Just come up with stuff and do it. The quicker you do that, the quicker you can get to what you really, obviously want to do: the images.

In a land of political uprising,
In a time where the world was changing....

One man,

Had a desire....to break the rules....

Coming soon, Assasins gone wild....A DVX User Production.....

:)

i would say keep it serious but thats my two cents. Honestly it's hard to write good solid comedy i have several stand-up comic friends and what you and all your friends and some people you associate with may find funny, others will not.

why not do classic lines from other movies? its fun but doesnt cheesen it up

And what a million people find funny, 2 million people won't....

That's why art isn't a one-size-fits-all.

Exactly my point, Sad Max. They've already started the visuals with no story, so why not just throw a bunch of hoo ha in so you can get down to what you obviously really want to do?

Get the visuals. Then if you think you can handle a real short, afterward, then get a writer.

You're probably right. The visuals limit the story big-time but it seems Anhar is already pretty far on them.

Anhar maybe you could give some insight on exactly what you're looking for.

well, I was looking along the lines of "rule breaking" I was hoping that by showing only the key moments, it would leave enough room to allow a plot to be fitted in.

How about, cutting out all the dialouge and just have a voice over, fill the rest with background orchestra/music and some Sound FX here and there?

For example, the voice over (VO) might start listing a few "rules" that the assassins follow.

Then VO introduces the main guy, and how he is the exception to the rule (i.e. he breaks them) and them simply perhaps the "establishment" naturally wants to kill him? (to bring back the order to the old rules?)

I don't know if that helps.

EDIT: oops forgot to say I lean towards the serious side rather than funny.

For all the faults and rampant weirdness in how mainstream professional narrative film and tv production is done, it's still a distillation of several decades' worth of what works.

In practical terms, story->screenplay->budget->schedule->production->post-production is simply the procedure that works the best, for a controlled, semi-predictable journey from "hey, we'd like to make a show" to, well, an actual show.

If starting in post, or without any idea for a story to tell, or whatever unusual approach appeals to you, hey, experimentation is fun and can be rewarding, too. But if your objective is a finished narrative that makes some kind of sense and is reasonably watchable, it might be worth taking heed of how it's "really" done.

The most horrendous catastrophes with which I have been professionally involved, usually share one big commonality: starting the process with no particular story, and no particular script. Everything very predictably fails, from that starting point.

For what it's worth, VO usually impresses me as a cheap and lazy-ass alternative to actual filmic storytelling. There are certainly some places where VO is suiatble, and even where it's a brilliant choice. But those places are exceeding few, and far between.

Well the object is to make a short trailer so I'm sure in this context the plot/story line is not that important or at least doesn't require that much detail.

I'm just after some simple VO lines that best fits the visual :)

Well, a trailer is usually a trailer *for* something - a distillation of what that something shows, or tells, or means. Without knowing what that show, or tell, or meaning is, it's hard to see how a trailer works.

One probable reason for the volume of studio crapola that gets produced, is the tendency to think in terms of "what makes for a cool trailer" without thinking about any kind of story, or what will make for an actual product (oh, the number of times I have heard, pitch me the trailer...!)

But I'm looking forward to seeing what you put together.
