dvxuser 3500mah battery

Does anyone know about how long the dvxuser advertised battery, the 3500mah Li-ion 4hr. battery, will last when using the DVX100a with the LCD screen?
I am also curious about this same scenario in regards to the battery that is included with the DVX100a.
Thanks!

Re: dvxuser 3500mah battery

I don't really pay attention, I know sounds crazy but for $45 buy a few. I have two and they last longer than the one that comes with the DVX, thats for sure. I believe the other day, with LCD on the entire time I got about 3 hours on a DVX battery. I'm going to buy a few more here very soon. Can't go wrong....

It is nearly impossible to say a battery lasts x amount of time because the biggest power hogs are the tape transport and the zoom lense, whose use can be different depending on what you are shooting. The more your tape transport rolls, the shorter the battery life. The more you zoom, the shorter your battery life. If you simply turn on the camera and let it sit (keeping power saver from kicking in), you might spend 500mah each hour of operation, if you kick the camera's butt you might spend 1250mah. Also, each recharging cycle reducing the ability of the battery to hold power, so as soon as the battery comes out of the box it is at the top of its game and may be almost twice as efficient as when it is at the bottom of its game 500 charge cycles (or whatever, depends on the battery quality and chemical mix) later.

That is why people carry several batteries. I usually carry one more battery than would be needed under the most absurd conditions (take a 4 hour battery and assume it lasts an hour), I keep a charger going on location if possible, and have AC as a backup. Figure it this way -- how much do you make a day off your work -- is it worth it to loose that pay for lack of power? Not to mention that reputation is built more on reliability than any other aspect of your work (if you cannot complete the shoot, no one will even use you again to find out your are the best photog in the state).

Thank you GlassSidewalk and Slapdragon- your advice is greatly appreciated!

Re: dvxuser 3500mah battery

yes indeed.. thats kinda why we mention that on the order page, to reference time against your stock DVX battery that came with the camera. Even altitude and temperature can make a big difference on run time. I have learned a crapload from getting these made, such as when we first ordered them, the 3000mah cells, and the company making them said we should mark them 3300mah because 10% of the cells actual capacity can reach that. The way it normally works in the industry is they test 50 cells in a lot, compare what the max capacity is and mark them whatever the highest ratings are. Pretty bunk to me :)

Anyways. we also just got in new cells, we are still marking them 3500 mah, but here is the chemical tests I was just talking about:

70% of Cells actual capacity can reach 3700mAh
10% of Cells can reach 3800
20% of Cells can reach 3600mAh.

So they should be good, the charge cycles have also been increased to over 1000 from the old 500 cycles.

Slapdragon, welcome to the forum. You've been posting excellent responses all over the place, and we're glad to have you.

Plus, anyone who's going to quote The Princess Bride in their signature line has got to be all right!

Re: dvxuser 3500mah battery

yeah.. i think hes gonna give you a run for your money Barry :)

Re: dvxuser 3500mah battery

Well, then he's all the more welcome (unless he actually runs for my money, which would be larcenous)!

Seriously, I am very impressed with the caliber of posters this little forum of yours has attracted. I don't think I've encountered any other forum (with the possible exception of the Vegas Creative Cow forum, six months ago) where there are so many knowledgeable, rational, intelligent posters.

Now you just have to recruit David Mullen over here and we'll be set!

Re: dvxuser 3500mah battery

David Mullen just became ASC.. I think I need to bribe him now or something to get him to spend his time over here :)
