THE PLACE TO DISCUSS BENCHMARK FILMS AT DVXUser!

DVXUser has become widely known and regarded as an online "virtual film school". Through its membership, DVXUser provides comprehensive user-to-user artistic, business and technical support. Now, through this discussion, I hope that we might extend this concept toward the critical study of filmmaking itself.

The DVXUser 100 Films Discussion will assign one film each month from the most current version of the AFI's 100 Years, 100 Movies list. In ten months, we will cover ten films selected by our members from the field of 100.

How will the films be selected?

DVXUser members vote on which film we should watch and discuss each month. You decide which film you want to nominate. It can be a personal favorite or simply a film you've always wanted to watch, but never got around to. After you vote, post a short plug on why you chose one film over the other nine. Whatever film ranks highest will be the one we all watch after voting closes!

What will be discussed?

Within the confines of the DVXUser rules of engagement (no religion and politics and so forth) we will discuss the film in the context of the world when it was released, writing, performances and techniques. Subject to regular moderation, it should be an open discussion of what goes into filmmaking now and within the historical context of the film we're examining.

Here is the list for August, 2007. Each film can be researched by clicking into its IMDB profile. Please drop into the thread once you've watched this month's picture for the subsequent discussion!

Schindler's List
The General
All About Eve
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Rear Window
The Gold Rush
Unforgiven
Modern Times
Bringing Up Baby
Yankee Doodle Dandy

Thanks fo dropping in,

I chose Schindler's List. One of my favorite movies of all time. It was hard to pick, cause I love Rear Window, and Unforgiven A LOT! But Schindler's is an amazing piece of film history. It was shot beautifully, and IMO Liam Neeson should have won Best Actor that year (against Tom Hanks!?!?, yes IMO).

One month where I'm good with anything chosen. I personally voted for Treasure of the Sierra Madre. It came up before and I was surprised how few people had seen it, so....

I thought about Rear Window, but I'm still prepping my comments on North by Northwest and thought another Hitch might be too soon.

voted for the general because Iv'e never seen it.

As for Schindler"s List Ralph Fiennes gave one of the top 10 performances of the century in that film.

bosindy,

I had the good fortune to see The General with a live organ accompaniment at the Castro theater in San Francisco a few years ago. That's definitely the way to see that film - or just about any of the silent pictures, really.

I was pleasantly surprised at the clarity of the 35mm print. Awesome.

All I'm going to say is that it's a good thing the only voting we do on this site is for movies. Otherwise we'd never make a decision.

I believe the number of ties on this is a statistical impossibility. :)

Schindler or Hitch this month. Despite my earlier comment, I think I may start with Rear Window.
