****, I'm so caught up in scheduling my short being shot in January I keep putting off this film. I've got a great idea, I just need to get on it. Maybe after finals I can concentrate.
Cool. I don't have any right to ok the use of copyrighted music anyway, it's illegal regardless of what I say. In my experience, using one of your favorite songs is usually a bad idea--it never seems to match the images, maybe because you associate it with certain events or feelings in your life. Things that aren't in the film. I'm sure you'll come up with something creative for the soundtrack.
..its probably best that you dont include anything that you wouldnt be able to in a normal film or contract job without premission or rights or granted access. you can show a controller,, just not the trademarked name on it.. or any copyrighted images or logos or things of that nature.. you could blur them in post, or do like i do and make up fake company names on wrappers and stickers and such and put them over the real logos and graphics on items. ..every soft drink in my films is "orange o rama" ..made with real orange flava taste! i use a graphic template for sizing and printing on lables and wrappers. not only is it good filmmaking practise since people should get used to making things within the rules that exist if they want to be professionals in any capacity, but its also best if youd like to take the film anywhere beyond this particular contest. most real contests play by the real rules, and it would be good to have a film that is made within those confines so that it can go in its original unaltered state into other contests and presentation arenas.
..that said i dont think that anyone would yell at you for having a bottle of coke on the counter in your film.. i dont think anyone would really care . im just saying that if you want to make a pro level competition peice then you shouldnt do it, and if your just in the amature arena then dont worry about it, but i would estimate that in order to claim any prize for a win you would need to have a clean peice that has NO violations. .. just like any other film festival or contest
.. p.s. if you want to use a peice of music .. then just buy licesning for it..then you can use it fairly and legally. it would probably be really cheap for this contest alone.
OK to provide 2 links? One Quicktime, one Windows Media? For those folks who have a preference...even if that preference is only that they prefer the smaller WMV file size. ;D
Or a link to a page containing links to both? (Which would make more sense.)
