dvx200 and rode ntg-2

Ordering my dvx today I also needed a mic and following recommendations from this site I asked for the ntg-2. The seller thought that it might be too long and suggested the ntg-1.

Any thoughts/experience?

Wow you have a DVX200? Where can I get one! I have the rode ntg-2 and I am happy with it. But since I don't have a basis of comparison other than the on board mic, I would get other opinions as well. And it is not too big.

hmm embarrassing. My fingers are so used to typing dvxuser that they just slipped that out there. So, yes hvx200!

The only difference between the two is the battery?

I havent much experience with sound recording so please try not to laugh too hard...

I gather the ntg 1 would be the best option to use for an on the camera mic, but what if I were to also use the same mic to use with a dat? Would it be I need a mic with its own battery then?

I havent a dat, yet. I'm just concerned that I will find myself down the road wishing that I had gone for the battery powered mic.

I guess that I'll just have to get a dat with phantom power.

Thanks.

it is the same microphone - take the short one - less weight for camera use

I had the same question so I looked at the Rode website and some of the specs are a little different between the Rode NTG 1 and NTG 2. Maybe you could explain them since I don't really know what they mean.

NTG 1 Maximum SPL = 139 db
NTG 2 Maximum SPL = 131 db

NTG 1 Dynamic Range = 121 db
NTG 2 Dynamic Range = 113 db

So the Max SPL and Dynamic Range numbers are higher on the NTG 1, but is that a good thing and if so, any real difference in the real world?

Thanks.

kelly i sow it 2 :-) i may guess that the difference are respect to minimum performers with battery in ntg-2 - i guess that with phantom power the ntg 2 will work better as it usially happens with electret mics .

Thanks for the reply. I'm about to get one of these (NTG 1 or NTG 2) to be my shotgun for my DVX 100 B (have Oktava hyper for boom) so since I have the choice of either is there any advantage to having one over the other?

I see that you said to choose the NTG 1 since it is lighter and shorter but is there any reason the NTG 2 (or any mike with its own power) with a DVX is an advantage?

no- no advantage at all - these with battery compartment mainly good to work with no phantom power mic inputs as radio transmitters ( these which dont supply phantom ) and usually consumer equip , dont see any benefit to use it with professional equip.
i can see some advantage to use it with butt plug and not use the butt plug internal phantom power which defeniatly decrease the working time of the transmitter ( about 175 mw per hour for 3 .5mili amp mic, i guess more for the ntg-2 ( the 2ma on the data sheet probably referenced to battery) )
that's the only benefit i see , you pay that in other way that your mic working on the minimum required voltage for the capsul which give more self noise , less dynamic range and less spl handling - in real life when you work with g-2 or something in that range transmitters i even dont count that -it will sound crap anyway:-)
for the end, if you not intend to use it whith wierless it symply waist of money , space and weight

Kelly,
Oleg probably hit it on the head. Most mics have a better dynamic range and higher SPL handling with a higher power supply. So the difference is probably that the NTG1 was on 48V and the NTG2 was on 1.5V. You can power the NTG2 with phantom and I have heard in more than one place that the only difference is the battery.

You probably wont buy a DAT because they aren't being made anymore, so a CF recorderis probably the way to go. You can also pick up a battery powered Phantom power adapter for around $50 if you end up needing one.

the mic is not polarized condenser any way - so the 48 ph converted to bias but usially for the optimal voltage which required to electret mic ,
the same mic could work with lower bias voltage as well ( usially 1.5v used because the aa battery) that what make usially difference in performers
